FWIW, I've just posted a short howto explaining how to identify the file
stored at the bad sector, and how to force sector reallocation at the bad
LBA. This will effectively 'repair' the disk though you will lose the
data in that disk block. Please see:

Bruce,

thank you for the nice explanation! It's very easy to understand and
perhaps you should include this document into the next release of
smartmontools.

I think there might even be a need for a "Hard-Disk-Failure-Howto".
Anyone here wants to write it, has data for something like that?
