ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.5-rc2/2.6.5-rc2-mm5/
- A fairly small update. Mainly attempting to stabilise the CPU scheduler
changes.
- A patch here which will hopefully fix the oopses which a few people have
seen in the NFS server code.
- The pestiferous SMP oops in vt_ioctl() is back, and I really fixed it
this time. I've a suspicion that the kernel used to have the right locking
in place, but someone removed it because of some deadlock. If your kernel
does appear to deadlock, please include a sysrq-T trace in the report.

Erm, note that tty drivers are supposed to handle the open/close stuff
themselves, and it is completely valid for ->close to be called while
another thread is in ->open. In fact, it's desirable since ->open may
be waiting for the DCD line from a modem to activate, while there may
be a simultaneous O_NONBLOCK open/ioctl/close from stty.

They cannot. This bug relates to racy handling of tty->count at the
tty_io.c level. If the driver's ->close sleeps and drops the BKL.

->open is not called under tty_sem. With this change, ->close is called
under tty_sem.
Are ->close implementations likely to block on hardware events?

Historically they have blocked in a well defined manner - eg when
dropping the DTR signal for a specified minimum time period.
They can also block until the data awaiting transmission has been
sent, which by default has a 30 second timeout, or may be configured
to be "until sent". Of course, if CTS is deasserted, we will wait
until the timeout.

I suspect such drivers have always had a barndoor-sized hole in them, if
someone tries to open the thing while ->close is sleeping.
I'll take another look at the darn thing tomorrrow.

These two patches break things quite a bit for me. With them, the kernel is
unable to open any tty (virtual console, pts, whatever), it seems (my system
is a dual AMD64 w/ NUMA w/o kernel preemption).

yup. Please revert tty-locking-again.patch. Or just do
rm drivers/char/tty* and start again.

I've already done it. I mean, I've reverted both patches and now it's OK (I
was not quite sure if there's any point in reverting only one of them).
