Hi Andrew,
NTFS does not compile if CONFIG_NTFS_RW is not set.
Patch is attached.
Note I used NTFS_RW as the rest of the NTFS code does.
Don't know whether CONFIG_NTFS_RW preferred.

Brice

Thanks for the patch.
That was my fault:
gcc 3.4 doesn't even warn about this, and I missed it while grep'ing.

It did not display the nice icons with gtk2.4 anymore.
And the fact that it generates ~10 warnings when being compiled annoy me
as well. Although I have not had the courage to try to fix this gtk
stuff.
A patch to fix gconfig on top of linus-latest is very welcome.

hm. I emailed you twice, and had a feeling that things weren't getting
through.
The patch caused those little pixmap buttons across the top of the main
window to vanish when using gtk+-1.2.10-28.1. See
http://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/patches/stuff/x.jpg.
I now note that scripts/kconfig/gconf.c doesn't compile at all with the
above backout patch. Drat.

But gconf is not supposed to build with gtk-1.2, it needs 2.x,
at least reding this:
linux/scripts/kconfig/Makefile:
HOSTLOADLIBES_gconf = `pkg-config gtk+-2.0 gmodule-2.0 libglade-2.0 --libs`
HOSTCFLAGS_gconf.o = `pkg-config gtk+-2.0 gmodule-2.0 libglade-2.0 --cflags` \
-D LKC_DIRECT_LINK
...
# GTK needs some extra effort, too...
$(obj)/.tmp_gtkcheck:
@if `pkg-config gtk+-2.0 gmodule-2.0 libglade-2.0 --exists`; then \
if `pkg-config gtk+-2.0 --atleast-version=2.0.0`; then \
touch $@; \
else \
echo "*"; \
echo "* GTK+ is present but version >= 2.0.0 is required."; \
echo "*"; \
false; \
fi \
else \
echo "*"; \
echo "* Unable to find the GTK+ installation. Please make sure that"; \
echo "* the GTK+ 2.0 development package is correctly installed..."; \
echo "* You need gtk+-2.0, glib-2.0 and libglade-2.0."; \
echo "*"; \
false; \
fi
endif
I can try just to make it compile, and then polish all the edges...
If you swear to me it does not have to build under gtk-1.2 (which with
current Makefile I do not know how can it be done), there are many stock
things that can be done automagically in 2.x, and not manually like in gtk-1.2.
TIA

OK.. I still don't have pixmaps over "Collapse" and "Expand" though.
And I assume we're again broken with gtk-2.4? What is the nature of that
breakage?

Serial console would be useful. Do sysrq-P and sysrq-T provide any info?

Hmm,
actually I haven't set up a serial console connection so let me try to
establish one first and get back to you whenever I have some results.

Hi again,
since I don't have a 9-pin serial port on my laptop I've been trying to
connect it with the testing machine over a 25-pin cable (on a 25-pin port),
which, according to the Serial-HOWTO is doable in theory but doesn't seem
that easy to do in practice. Setserial reports that the ports are ok:
setserial -a /dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 3000
Flags: spd_normal skip_test
[other machine]:
setserial -a /dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS0, Line 0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 3000
Flags: spd_normal skip_test
but minicom or other serial line communication utils do not send or receive
any chars. Any ideas?
Boris.

On laptops, 25-pin ports tend to be parallel, rather than serial. At
least, that's my experience.

Hook a printer up to the 25-pin port (the other end of the cable will
most likely have 36 pins), then use (I think, it's been a while)
/dev/lp0 as your console device, rather than /dev/ttyS#. This assumes
that your kernel has parallel console support compiled in, and that
the parallel port support is compiled in (as opposed to being a module).
And if you do the above, make sure to have lots of paper handy. Also,
this trick probably won't work with all printers, but it stands a good
chance of working.

And this is the truth, actually. It is :( a parallel port.

This is an option but I don't have a printer right now so I think I'll go with
another idea a guy gave me on our laptop forum - USB to serial adapter, it is
relatively cheap (~20€ in Germany) and trivial to install. Still, thanks for
your help, I'll be reporting as soon as I get the gadget.

People running old systems running only gtk 1.2 always have menuconfig
as 'escape' possibility.
So the price paid to have a cleaner gconfig seems OK.
I recommend to remove the gtk 1.2 cruft and focus on gtk 2.x.
If you do please work on top of Linus' latest and not -mm.

1kB allocations from the stack aren't a good idea considering that you
might have only a 4kB stack altogether.
Running "make checkstack" after compiling the kernel helps you finding
such problems.

Hi Andrew,
I've tried 2.6.12-rc1-mm1 today and it stops booting at the same point as
2.6.11-mm4. What might help is the info that rc1 boots just fine so it is
something in the mm series that impedes the boot process. However, sysrq-P
and sysrq-T do not provide anything - sysrq doesn't show any activity at all,
i.e. it doesn't even print the usage info message. Infact, the keyboard is
dead, it doesn't even turn on or off any lights (NumLock etc).
Any ideas? (Additional printk's added manually, etc..)
Regards,
Boris.

- Make sure that io-apic is enabled, boot with `nmi_watchdog=1'.
- Make sure that CONFIG_DETECT_SOFTLOCKUP is enabled
- Add `initcall_debug' to the boot command line, see if that tells us
anything.
- Disable CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC, if it was enabled
- Send me your .config.
kgdb is the way to diagnose this one.

Yeah, this is going to take a while. I've ordered an usb-to-serial converter
for my laptop so that I can connect it to the desktop machine over the serial
port and this is gonna be here next week so then I'll give kgdb a try.
Regards,
Boris.
