Hello list,
I want to announce a project which was in discussion a bit beside klive.
Linux Statistics [1] or LiSt how this project is called, is afaik the one
and only page which generates such detailed statistics about *all* stuff
around linux.
It is a client/server project which generates accurate statistics of the
linux userbase and their hard- and software.
For this it provides a small client called "LiSt" which is written in
python and which everybody has to install to register his machine in our
database. This client application will then collect the following hard-
and software information from your linux system (use "LiSt -p" to see the
information which will be sent):
- The installation date of your distribution
- The hostname (no fqdn or ips)
- The architecture (x86/i586/i686, ppc, and so on)
- CPU information: vendor, model, number of cpus, frequencies
- RAM
- Swap
- Timezone
- user defined locales
- Windowmanager
- Kernel version
- Uptime information
- The size of mounted partitions (no shares)
- the used filesystems
- The hardware-IDs of used ISA/PCI/AGP and USB hardware
The client will send these information to our server, which stores them in
our database and generates accurate statistics out of them.
All of the collected information and data is absolutly anonymous!

counter.li.org is a great project and I'm registered there too since a few
years. But it has not such detailed statistics over the used hardware.
Sure, it has statistics, but not such detailed some.
And there are several other features on LiSt which I'm missing on
counter.li.org. For example the hardware-database in which every user can
vote and comment his own hardware and others can search for hardware to
find out which is best supported under linux.
Or the "position locator", the maps on which you can see how the
distribution of linux is on the whole world. Sure, there are not very many
systems registered (just only three in germany), but this will hopefully
grow fast. ;)

This is very useful to focus development, eventually. It would be nice
if you could also come up with a way to provide feedback on the kernel
modules used (loaded will do, but used would be cuter ;-).

Yeah, that's great, but not really the same which I want to do.
My statistics about the kernel configuration and the loaded modules will be
much easier, especially easier to read. ;)
But that's not the only last thing which is planned.
I'm also planning an interface for users where they should be able to let
the interface/webpage generate the best matching .config for their kernel
based on the provided hard- and software. *g*
And it will provide an interactive helpsystem around the kernel-options and
much more.
Well more user (newbie) orientated, you see?
