Subject: Linux v2.6.17-rc4


Ok, I've let the release time between -rc's slide a bit too much again,
but -rc4 is out there, and this is the time to hunker down for 2.6.17.

If you know of any regressions, please holler now, so that we don't miss
them.

-rc4 itself is mainly random driver fixes (sound, infiniband, scsi,
network drivers), but some splice fixes too and some arch (arm, powerpc,
mips) updates. Shortlog follows,

It is no regression.

We are working on it, but there won't be any fix for 2.6.17, as
very intrusive changes are needed to fix this.

Assertion failed sounds rather fatal to me.

b44 on x86-64 is currently broken on systems with >1GB. This affects
some people's laptops and is a regression. I have patches that I will
send soon, just waiting for feedback.

Not a recent regression, but symbol_put_addr() will solidly
deadlock. A patch has been posted twice, but got no
response. I would like to see symbol_put_addr() fixed
in 2.6.17.

I attach a previous mail where I explain why we would
like to use this for DVB stuff. You can also find

symbol_put_addr() currently has no users, that's

But it is not fatal. Trust me. I am the author of most of the code.
The worst thing that can happen is that the card does not work.
The best thing that can happen is that it works with some luck.

You did not look close enough.

Well, the backtrace could be removed.
But I am for not removing the assertions completely, because
this way people don't see what is going on, if the device does not
work.
It is non-fatal in the sense that it does not crash the machine.
It _may_ be fatal, that the device does not work. The
driver is CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL for some reason.

To say it again: The 4318 is not completely supported, yet.
It may work with some luck, but it is not guaranteed and only
lower bitrates are supported.

I've got an oops in the forcedeth driver on shutdown. Sorry for the crappy
camera phone pictures, this board doesn't have RS232 ports:

It was initially difficult to reproduce, but I found I could do so reliably if
I ssh'ed into the box and halted it remotely, then it would always oops on
shutdown. I assume this is because the driver is still active when something
happens to it during halt.

There's been just a single commit since -rc3:

forcedeth: fix multi irq issues
ebf34c9b6fcd22338ef764b039b3ac55ed0e297b

However, it could have just been hidden since before -rc3, so I'll try to work
backwards if nobody has any immediate ideas..

The interrupt handler could be called during the same time (on different
cpu) the dev->stop function is clearing out the rings (nv_txrx_reset).

I have at least one hot fix too pending confirmation by paulus (some
machine probe time that could harm various stuffs by mis-identifying
pseries at boot), and possibly another I'm still tracking (looks like
ide_unregister is broken but I'm still trying to isolate the bug,
definitely a regression though but might be a couple of kernels old)

PCMCIA is the obvious one I'm hitting here. The pcmcia core code as well
as being somewhat unreadable will happily hand out shared IRQs to
drivers that ask for an exclusive one leading to setup_irq errors and
non-working devices.

The main problem seems to be that the kernel will hand back the shared
PCI IRQ for a pcmcia port even when ExclusiveIRQ is requested. I've got
a patch here to clean this up a bit, but it changes the API to pass back
the fact the available IRQ is shared rather than force it, so may not be
a good candidate close to 2.6.17

Subject: [PATCH] slab: Fix kmem_cache_destroy() on NUMA

With CONFIG_NUMA set, kmem_cache_destroy() may fail and say "Can't
free all objects." The problem is caused by sequences such as the
following (suppose we are on a NUMA machine with two nodes, 0 and 1):

* Allocate an object from cache on node 0.
* Free the object on node 1. The object is put into node 1's alien
array_cache for node 0.
* Call kmem_cache_destroy(), which ultimately ends up in __cache_shrink().
* __cache_shrink() does drain_cpu_caches(), which loops through all nodes.
For each node it drains the shared array_cache and then handles the
alien array_cache for the other node.

However this means that node 0's shared array_cache will be drained,
and then node 1 will move the contents of its alien[0] array_cache
into that same shared array_cache. node 0's shared array_cache is
never looked at again, so the objects left there will appear to be in
use when __cache_shrink() calls __node_shrink() for node 0. So
__node_shrink() will return 1 and kmem_cache_destroy() will fail.

This patch fixes this by having drain_cpu_caches() do
drain_alien_cache() on every node before it does drain_array() on the
nodes' shared array_caches.

The problem was originally reported by Or Gerlitz <[email protected]>.

I get a nervous feeling about touching NUMA slab code, because just
the topic alone makes it sound hairy. But I think my diagnosis and
fix are pretty clear, and this definitely fixes crashes seen when
unloading IB modules. It's a regression from 2.6.16, and x86_64
machines with > 1 NUMA node are quite common, so this probably should
go into 2.6.17.

Manfred located the fault and Andrew's holding a fix for it in -mm. Hopefully
it'll end up in mainline before 2.6.17.
