Subject: kobject_add failed with -EEXIST

Hi!

Does anybody have some clue, what's wrong with the attached module?
Kernel complains when the module is insmoded second time (DRIVER_DEBUG enabled):

What does sysfs look like at this point in time? Does
/sys/class/cls_class exist?

Also, which kernel version are you using here?

I just tried this with 2.6.19-rc6 and it worked just fine, no problems.
Perhaps you have some userspace program keeping the
/sys/class/cls_class/cls_device/ files open?

No, there is no such dir (it disappears).

> Also, which kernel version are you using here?

2.6.19-rc6, 2.6.19-rc5-mm2

If this is the case, we'd have a denial of service security problem.

Unlikely, only (insmod, rmmod) x2 (and no entries in lsof). I've just killed
udevd and got this:

I'm going to reboot and try fresh boot. (The 2.6.19-rc5-mm2 kernel was on an
another machine, althought both are FC6s).

I tried it now on
$ cat /etc/debian_version
testing/unstable
(I don't know exactly what it is)
with the same result (BUG in kobject_add) -- 2.6.19-rc5.

The -mm has
# CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED is not set

thanks,

Ok, I'm again, not even init=/bin/bash helped (with sysfs not mounted and udev
not started).

Could you try this patch? I also had similar problem.

Subject: [PATCH] driver core: delete virtual directory on class_unregister()

Class virtual directory is created as the need arises.
But it is not deleted when the class is unregistered.

Hm, why is this not reproducable for me then without this patch?

Very strange, I'll dig into it some more this evening, gotta go do
family stuff for the rest of the day...

thanks,

I can't duplicate this here at all with your example code. Check
userspace to see if HAL or your udev scripts are doing something
"odd"...

What distro is this, and what version of HAL and udev are you using?

thanks,

I can reproduce it by reloading raw.ko on 2.6.19-rc5-mm2.
not happened on 2.6.19-rc6.

After unloading raw.ko, /sys/devices/virtual/raw is still exist.
So next loading raw.ko will fail.

I'm not sure, if you get these?
http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/11/20/168
http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/11/20/197

I tried init=/bin/bash with no effect. 2.6.19-rc6 and 2.6.19-rc5-mm2 are on FC6,
2.6.19-rc5 is on some debian unstable (everything is mentioned in those links --
and my .config too).

$ rpm -q udev hal
udev-095-14
hal-0.5.8.1-4.fc6

I can reproduce this on 2.9.19-rc5-mm2 with CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED as
well.

And as virtual_device_parent() fails to do much error checking, we end
up with /sys/devices/rawctl instead of /sys/devices/virtual/raw/rawctl.
raw_init() won't notice anything has gone wrong...

Perhaps it would make sense to create /sys/device/virtual/<class>/
already in class_register() (regardless of whether there will be any
devices for this class) and unconditionally remove it in
class_unregister()? Removing something in _unregister() which was not
created by _register() but by some unrelated action seems a bit
lopsided to me...

no idea, but I got the same error msg during boot with a monolithic
2.6.18.3 (vanilla) when it comes to init of the sound hardware:
