hm, i'm not sure. Right now we just have a 32-bit defconfig and a 64-bit
defconfig - but there are about 8 subarchitectures in arch/x86. Given
the amount of variety in PC hardware, i doubt it makes sense to start
collecting defconfigs for hardware variants - we'd end up having
hundreds or thousands of them. Even ARM has only 75 defconfigs.
what i do is i regularly test whether "make allyesconfig" boots all the
way up to general user-space in regular whitebox PC hardware. For
example the attached config is such a config, i successfully booted it
on 2.6.25-rc3 on a stock PC.
This way we can ensure that the (near-) totality of the config space is
bootable on regular PCs, and the subarch support is basically just
bootstrap and quirks differences. Longer term we should get rid of the
subarchitecture distinction altogether and turn them into regular
quirks/callbacks/drivers.
In fact for rdc321x that should be rather easy to do right now: wdt.c
could/should become a regular watchdog driver, and do we really need
those GPIO specials in include/asm-x86/mach-rdc321x/ ? I believe it
should be possible to boot CONFIG_X86_GENERICARCH on a rdc321x. Am i
missing any particular complication?

Apart from selecting the 486 instruction subset, everything else should be
allright though I had the habit to have a stripped down kernel for testing.

The GPIO calls will be moving later when I have finished the gpiolib
integration for RDC just like what is currently done for ARM. You are right
for the watchdog driver, I will move it right now.

What I want is at least one defconfig per subarchitecture for compile
tests.
And especially considering the original purpose "configuration users can
use as a starting point for configuring their kernel" I even wouldn't
mind if we had a few dozen x86 defconfigs.

You are testing something completely different here.
What I want is that e.g. after fiddling with kernel headers I want an
easy way of having much compile coverage. And my script that builds all
defconfig's is trivial (although it takes a day to finish).

You miss our headers mess.
You remember how your big x86 merge this merge window broke 8 or 9 other
architectures? Change one file under include/ and watch how many
configurations no longer build.
Or other subtle differences between the subarchs that have in the past
led to compile errors.
I do consider them useful for the way I'm doing kernel tests, and even
if you don't consider them that useful can we agree that adding a
defconfig is neither a big deal for the subarchitecture maintainer nor
imposes any maintainance work on you as maintainer (except for sometimes
applying patches adding/updating them)?

Generally agreed (with my biggest worry being whether changing
CLOCK_TICK_RATE from a compile time constant to a runtime
variable has any performance effects).

no, i think you misunderstood me. I do allyesconfig testing to make sure
the kernel is still generic enough on PC hardware - not to catch build
breakage.
What i do against build breakage is randconfig testing. That catches far
more build breakage than a few limited number of defconfigs would ever.
More defconfigs would just be a constant maintenance drag, they are
rather pointless on PC hardware anyway (we'd have to have at least a few
hundred of them for it to be meaningful as a "default config") and it
does not really solve the problem either.

How do you test whether a x86 merge might break the compilation of
e.g. some ARM platform without using any defconfig?
And building all defconfigs is the trivial way of having most reasonable
configurations covered with only one day of compile time.

My goal was "one per subarchitecture" which is not such a big number.
At least for the patches I'm sending more defconfigs reduce the

yes, we do test that too. (we added this recently)

better/full coverage, randconfig should be used.

at least on x86 subarchitectures are not at all that important (they are
a rather inflexible build-time concept), and as you have seen it in this
thread, we are working on reducing their count. 99% of the real hardware
is covered under the generic subarchitecture.

The clean solution would be to make PIT_TICK_RATE/CLOCK_TICK_RATE a
variable that defaults to 1193182 on x86, and which an early quirk would
set to 1189200 on AMD Elan and to 1041667 on RDC321X.
likewise, other subarch details should be turned into specific drivers
or specific quirks as well.

The two big problems with randconfigs are:
- either you build each .config both with and without your patch or you
have to manually check which of the failures are caused by your patch
- you require at least an order of magnitude more builds for having the
same amount of common configurations covered
And any solution that only works on x86 (e.g. based on the expectation
that all randconfig configurations normally build) is of zero value
for me since x86 is only one out of 23 architectures.

In my workflow defconfigs are an important part of testing my patches.
But that noone cares whether I break other x86 subarchitectures is not
really a problem for me.

so if an arguably sane testing method "only" works on x86 then the right
solution is to fix the other architectures to be sanely testable too.
I've seen architectures that were build-tested for the _first time_ at
around 2.6.24-rc8...

If you want to fix them I won't stop you...
Until they are fixed I'm staying at using the defconfigs.
But then there's still the other problem that at least I simply don't
want to wait two weeks for having the test compiles of a patch finish.

As i said it before, it's totally senseless to add zillions of
defconfigs to x86. The two that are there should be enough for a
sniff-test - and much more than that has to be done to ensure that a
patch doesnt break anything. Not even a 100 defconfigs would match
proper randconfig coverage.
according to one particular arbitrary piece of metrics [1], ~99.15% of
our testers use x86 - and the oopses collected on kerneloops.org show a
similar proportion.

sorry, s/build-tested/boot-tested.
there's been only 6 commits to arch/v850 between v2.6.23 and v2.6.24.
None of them seems to suggest that anyone ever tested v850 in the last
year or so.

But the fact that the v850 port does not even compile is known for a

Fully agreed.
But to do a few number of repetitive builds over time makes it much easier
to see if something are degenerating.
I could save a selected number of handcrafted configs so I was sure to
cover relevant different configs. But then I had to find out the
typical configuration of various sub-architectures etc.
And asking me to do randconfig is not an option. I have only this
machine to work on and with a -j8 build it gets unresponsive at least
so much that it irritates me.

10 different configs would cover what I have in mind. This is not all
sort of combinations of dirvers and kernel haching options multiplied
with the arch specific options. This is the typical set of options
that is used to build a kernel to the relevant sub-architectures.
And an occasional defconfig update are not a maintanence burden.
It is a simple equation: 10 additional defconfigs can give you more
build coverage by additional people. Is it worth it?

i dont think it's worth it on x86, because it has no real meaning so it
will just be an arbitrary thing that deteriorates over time.
Subarchitectures on x86 are just a shortcut for the "0.1% of systems
that were lazy to be properly abstracted into the general PC code". We
are discouraging additional subarches and the one that got added
recently will go away soon. The rest is legacy.
Really, we should concentrate our testing to where our _testers_ are and
where our developers are.
And according to lkml, http://kerneloops.org and a 300,000+ sample

testers are distributed like this:
- more than 90% of all kernel developers use general PC hardware
- more than 95% of our active testers use general PC hardware

phones as "a million users", unless they become an active part of our
ecosystem and do things like hook into kerneloops.org. It's that simple,

definitely if what you want to do is to use your compilation resources
to increase the quality of a patch as efficiently as possible. Testing
UP/SMP 32bit/64bit defconfig and allnoconfig catches most of the
immediate problems - allmodconfig will catch most of the rest. If you
want to catch _all_ bugs that are possible the .config space, then 20
randconfig builds give a higher than 99.9% confidence factor already, in
my experience.
Sometimes, very rarely, deep down the chain of some really quirky
Kconfig dependencies, there can be up to 1:512 chance build bugs hiding,
which statistically need a 1000 randconfig builds to trigger. I saw a
few in the past, but they are really rare. No amount of pre-cooked
defconfigs would cover them - they are usually in drivers, not in
subarch support.
what would be really useful is an automatic Kconfig tree analysis, with
the printing out of too deep dependencies perhaps? Which might result in
the breaking down of too deep dependencies - to increase the coverage of
randconfig testing. Sometimes the number of "depends on" conditions are
mind-blowing.

Sounds like the academic masturbation of trying to find an optimal
solution to a non-existing problem instead of fixing real issues.
The fact that most testers have a PC plus Toralfs randconfigs has
already catched virtually all compile issues visible on a PC in the
past during -rc.
If you want to attack real problems then write a script that sends the
names of all people who signed-off patches touching include/linux/ or
include/asm-generic/ without having tested the compilation of at least
the defconfig on all architectures to George W. Bush together with the
information that these people possess at least as many weapons of mass
destruction as Saddam Hussein in 2003...

If I get into kconfig hacking again I will try to look into fixing
kconfig so we can have all Kconfig files in one hirachy.
This would gives us useful information such as dependencies on
unknow symbols and the like.
Statistics as you describe could be relevant to find bad
Kconfig design but I see this much more as a check thing
for bad design than something to make it easier to reach
more configs with 100 randconfigs.
Anyway - this is just vapourware until someone starts
to hack on kconfig.
