Subject: linux-next: Tree for October 30

Hi all,

It turns out that using a different binutils (2.19) gets the powerpc
allyesconfig building and a different compiler (4.3.2) makes the sparc32
defconfig build.

I am no longer commenting on conflicts that are clearly just caused by
slight differences in what has been merged into Linus' tree and
linux-next or conflicts caused by further changes in the linux-next after
a subset of a tree has been merged.

Changes since 20081030:

Undropped tree: rr

The xfs tree gained a build fix patch.

The kvm tree lost its 2 conflicts.

The rr tree lost all its conflicts.

The creds tree gained 3 conflicts against the xfs tree.

I have also applied the following patches for known problems:

sparc: qlogicpti fallout from sbus removal
Work around ld bug in older binutils (powerpc patch)
ftrace: rename FTRACE to FUNCTION_TRACER more successfully. (sh patch)
nfsctl: credentials error
coda: credentials error
cpu_alloc: per_cpu_offset is already defined for !CONFIG_SMP
ia64: Fix gru compiler warning

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/sfr/linux-next.git
(patches at
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/sfr/linux-next/). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups, it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig,
44x_defconfig and allyesconfig and i386, sparc and sparc64 defconfig.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 123 trees (counting Linus' and 14 trees of patches pending for
Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Jan Dittmer for adding the linux-next tree to his build tests
at http://l4x.org/k/ , the guys at http://test.kernel.org/ and Randy
Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

Yes ... present in the 2.6.28-rc as well. I've got it all fixed up
locally.

This type of breakage is more or less expected given that I wait until
-rc1 for the tree to stop churning before trying to fix voyager and the
subarchitectures, and the fact that the current way x86 is being
developed tends to break them.

one problem is the number of x86/Voyager testboxes - how many of them
is there in existence - one or two, all of them owned by you?

the other problem is that you are apparently checking whether
x86/Voyager builds (boots?) at all only once every couple of months -
once per kernel cycle or so. That obviously means you'll be affected
by an accumulated set of bugs. Nobody else _can_ test it instead of
you, because no other kernel hacker owns this hardware.

So ... the right long-term way out of this is to do what we did with
all the other x86 subarchitectures: to convert Voyager into a generic
platform, via extension of the x86_quirks interfaces. That way we can
remove the remainder of the fragile "x86 subarchitecture" concept.
(which should never have been added to begin with)

Would you be interested in helping us out with such a project? It
would be a nice cleanup for sure.

Sure, I'd be interested in looking into that.

However, it won't help the problems since they're mostly compile
breakages caused by tampering with the HAL API for x86 and not seeing
that this affects various subarches. Moving voyager to a quirk wouldn't
fix that problem.

it would fix that problem largely because we'd no longer have such
'HAL API' - we'd have runtime differences and function pointers.

> [...] Moving voyager to a quirk wouldn't fix that problem.

btw., Voyager would not be a "quirk" (putting it that way looks a bit
derogatory perhaps) - instead it would be a regular x86 platform, with
a couple of quirk handlers to handle Voyager specialities.

Look at how CONFIG_X86_VISWS works today for example: that option only
activates the quirk handlers - and a VISWS bzImage will boot fine on a
regular PC. This is a far more powerful way of handling x86 hardware
deviations than a full build-time thing. It makes it also far easier
to test - while we cannot test the _quirks_, we can easily test the
build and still boot it on regular PCs. (which makes it far more
likely for people to enable this option)

This principle was followed for all the x86 subarchitectures we've
converted already: visws and numaq is done, rdc3210 is basically there
already. (waiting for generic gpio bits to complete that fully - but
rdc otherwise has no differences from the generic arch code)

Voyager is certainly one of the most complex subarch cases, hence was
it left last :-)

Meanwhile, voyager compilation can be tested with the following
KCONFIG_ALLCONFIG file (suppy CROSS_COMPILE if necessary):

CONFIG_X86_VOYAGER=y
# CONFIG_PCI is not set

make ARCH=i386 KCONFIG_ALLCONFIG=... allmodconfig
make ARCH=i386

Before you advocate this, think what it would entail. Voyager replaces
(and has to replace because its not apic based) the entirety of smp.c
and smpboot.c ... they'd all have to be abstracted through function
pointers.

Originally I wanted to do this ... after all, it's the way solaris does
its SMP hal replacement as well, but a lot of argument on the mailing
lists back in 1998 convinced me that we didn't want to pay the pipeline
disruption penalty of a function pointer for every SMP operation. I
know CPUs have become way faster over that decade, but I believe (feel
free to correct) that the pipeline disruption penalty of function
pointers has actually become worse, not better.

The subarchitectures, with their direct function replacement (and
consequent having to accept a particular one to compile with) was the
final compromise.

I really think you don't want voyager slowing down mainline SMP by even
a few percentage points?

Yes ... but the problem is that all the rest (even numa and visws) use
smp.c and smpboot.c. That makes them essentially x86 apic systems with
a few quirks (which is ideal for a quirk based system). Voyager
isn't ... it replaces the entire SMP HAL.

Yes ... been having IRC conversations about that. We'd need to use
runtime patching to fix the performance regressions virtualisation has
been causing us first ... but then we could use it for voyager.

I thought we already were, at least to some degree (the call sites are
way too big and way bigger than they need to be, so we end up with a lot
of NOPs. I proposed a solution to Jeremy at Kernel Summit, but he
basically said "I don't want to maintain that, I don't care about
hardware performance", which is understandable but highly unfortunate.)

in practice the function pointer overhead is almost unmeasurable for
things like IPIs which are rather expensive to issue. In fact it's
probably more expensive on Voyager as it does not utilize the local
APIC for SMP messaging (which is pretty much the only
performance-sensitive thing here). It uses its own glue logic it
appears, which is almost certainly behind the system bus.

James, how many cycles do typical SMP ops take on Voyager?

Otherwise it's a quiet randconfig tree. Must be short of new commits. ;)

Hm, sorry about that, I thought I did :(

I'll work on it in the morning.

This one is fixed in my trees, so you should not get this anymore.

I've now fixed this one.

Heh ... don't be so sure: The VIC uses an array of up to 8 standard
8255 IRQ lines, which is slow. The QIC uses CPI trigger via cache line
interference, which is far faster than APIC bus based systems (but is
fairly similar to the way SAPIC systems work ... almost a decade after
the original QIC system).

> James, how many cycles do typical SMP ops take on Voyager?

To be honest, I'm not too bothered about that. What bothers me is that
if a normal system performance goes down because of the function pointer
replacement (remember all x86 SMP systems will see an increase in
function pointer usage because of this approach), then it probably
wasn't worth it.

However, the only way to be sure is to try it and get the benchmarks.
