Subject: linux-next: Tree for June 17

Hi all,

Changes since 20090616:

This tree fails to build for powerpc allyesconfig.

The ext4 tree build failure meant that I am now using the version from
next-20090615.

The 4vl-dvb tree lost its conflict.

The kvm tree gained a build failure (due to powerpc now using -Werror)
for which I applied a patch.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/sfr/linux-next.git
(patches at
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/sfr/linux-next/). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES) and i386, sparc and sparc64 defconfig.
These builds also have CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED,
CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 128 trees (counting Linus' and 19 trees of patches pending for
Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Jan Dittmer for adding the linux-next tree to his build tests
at http://l4x.org/k/ , the guys at http://test.kernel.org/ and Randy
Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

Is there any point to pci_slot existing without CONFIG_SYSFS?
I don't see how you can interact with it in any meaningful way.
Perhaps CONFIG_PCI_SLOT should depend on CONFIG_SYSFS?

I've got a code fix queued up, but maybe a Kconfig dependency is the
way to go...

What is the code fix like?
The Kconfig fix makes sense to me.

Here's the patch I have (sorry cut & paste):

Fix this build error when CONFIG_SYSFS is not set:
drivers/pci/slot.c: In function 'pci_hp_create_module_link':
drivers/pci/slot.c:327: error: 'module_kset' undeclared

I agree with Matthew. You can't do anything useful with the
functionality in drivers/pci/slot.o unless you have sysfs, so a
Kconfig dependency is more appropriate.

From: Alex Chiang <[email protected]>

PCI: drivers/pci/slot.c should depend on CONFIG_SYSFS

There is no way to interact with a physical PCI slot without
sysfs, so encode the dependency and prevent this build error:

drivers/pci/slot.c: In function 'pci_hp_create_module_link':
drivers/pci/slot.c:327: error: 'module_kset' undeclared

Sigh, this won't work because the PCI core blithely assumes we have
sysfs:

drivers/built-in.o: In function `pci_bus_add_device':
/kio/work/achiang/kernels/linux-2.6/drivers/pci/bus.c:89: undefined reference to `pci_create_sysfs_dev_files'
drivers/built-in.o: In function `pci_stop_dev':
/kio/work/achiang/kernels/linux-2.6/drivers/pci/remove.c:24: undefined reference to `pci_remove_sysfs_dev_files'

So, here is v3 that actually does build with !CONFIG_SYSFS. It
touches a bit more now, but I believe it is still appropriate
because neither pci_slot.ko nor any of the drivers in
drivers/pci/hotplug/ are useful without sysfs.

From: Alex Chiang <[email protected]>

PCI: drivers/pci/slot.c should depend on CONFIG_SYSFS

There is no way to interact with a physical PCI slot without
sysfs, so encode the dependency and prevent this build error:

drivers/pci/slot.c: In function 'pci_hp_create_module_link':
drivers/pci/slot.c:327: error: 'module_kset' undeclared

This patch _should_ make pci-sysfs.o depend on CONFIG_SYSFS too,
but we cannot (yet) because the PCI core merrily assumes the
existence of sysfs:

drivers/built-in.o: In function `pci_bus_add_device':
drivers/pci/bus.c:89: undefined reference to `pci_create_sysfs_dev_files'
drivers/built-in.o: In function `pci_stop_dev':
drivers/pci/remove.c:24: undefined reference to `pci_remove_sysfs_dev_files'

So do the minimal bit for now and figure out how to untangle it
later.

Applied, thanks.
