- If replying to this email, please rewrite the Subject: appropriately.
- Please also cc the relevant developer(s). Locate the patch in
http://userweb.kernel.org/~akpm/mmotm/broken-out/ and check the signoff
and Cc lines to find the names and email addresses.
- If you were bcc'ed on this email then you and I have unfinished
business. Please see if you can work out what it is from the below and
let me know ;)
- There's an unusual amount of memory management work here.
- I seem to have a lot of patches which people were going to send me
updates for, and which might have outstanding reviewer issues.
- If someone understand why I'm (still) sitting on 176 patches on behalf
of subsystem maintainers, please fell free to explain this to me.

Regarding mtd-make-onenand-genericc-more-generic.patch, I'm not really
sure what happened. To recap:
It was posted to the mtd list here:
http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2009-August/026805.html
Kyungmin objected to the driver name change here:
http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2009-August/026807.html
I pointed out that the rough rationale for the name change here:
http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2009-August/026808.html
and offered to redo the patch keeping the old name if Kyungmin felt the
rationale wasn't valid, but received no reply. Subsequently, Artem
mentioned that he had merged it in to his l2-mtd-2.6.git tree here:
http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2009-August/026866.html
which subsequently seems to not actually have happened.
This is a pretty trivial patch, and I don't mind respinning it in
whatever form folks are content with. I had assumed given the mention
that it had been merged in to the l2 tree that the rationale was
sufficient for merging.

I don't think that Artem's tree is in linux-next, so I have no
visibility of what's happening with that patch.
I do think that Artem's tree should be in linux-next.
I guess I'll just hose the patch at dwmw2 and will see what happens. I
sent it on Aug 6, with no effect.

This should go through PNP tree (do we have one?).

Not really. Bjorn heeps an eye on pnp. Sometimes merges through acpi,
sometimes through -mm.
I'll merge it I guess, but where is the corresponding change to the
winbond driver?

You can try. One of my functions is pointlessly sending patches at
maintainers so you don't have to.

Well, I did put my patch to my l2-mtd-2.6.git tree:
http://git.infradead.org/users/dedekind/l2-mtd-2.6.git/commit/6e6e7d0e163148c620b4807b1ffac973f9805f20
I just put it to the dunno branch which means "I did not review this".
The master branch contains the stuff I did review.
And the idea was that dwmw2 would then take a look at all these patches
and merge them. He did merge the stuff from the master branch, but did not
merge the stuff from the dunno branch (yet).

I know it is frustrating when maintainers ignore patches, we feel this pain
with ARM patches, for example. It is unpleasant to re-send patches 4 times,
and get zero response, not even "I have not time now" one. On the other hand,
I understand maintainers who are busy with other things.
So I just try to help by collecting people's stuff, review _some_ of it, but
I do not merge this upstream.

Well, these patches have been sitting in my tree in dunno for long as
well. They are still there:

I think these are ready for merging, I'll let Kame and Daisuke comment
on it more. The resource counter scalability patch is the most
important patch in the series.

I don't have any objection for merging these patches.

While testing memcg, I feel that only I and Balbir and Nishimura are heavy
testers of memcg in mmotm. Because Nishimura's test is very good, I think
we could get good quality to some extent.
Then, I think it's time to move to -rc for getting wider testers.
But Balbir, soft-limit is a difficult thing. plz keep checking.

plz don't call it as resource counter scalability patch ;)
It just skips resoruce_counter, resource_counter itself is still slow.
root-cgroup-memcg-scalability patch is good name.
I'll post other-cgroup-memcg-scalability patch series when it seems ready.
It's what I need but not for 2.6.32.

I posted the most recent version of my patch, which is based on the pnp
layer rather than the acpi layer and which addresses every single comment
I've gotten so far, to linux-input, linux-kernel, Dmitry and you.
It's archived here (among other places):
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg04396.html
I assumed that Dmitry would be the logical person to push the patch
upstream and he indicated some hesitation if the driver would change its
mode of operation completely in a later revision (if the input subsystem
grows IR capabilities that is), see the relevant parts at the end of:
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg04395.html
I don't think these fears are reason enough to block the driver from
inclusion, if the input subsystem grows additional IR capabilities any and
all IR drivers will have to change accordingly and the IR capabilities
will serve to support additional functionality rather than providing a
drastic change to existing functionality.

It is not a big deal either way -- it is mostly theoretical -- but the
old code seems to be safer in those corner cases. I don't understand
why they are pushing it really.

I think this change looks good, and I think the winbond driver uses it.
I don't object to it going in via -mm so it stays together with the
winbond driver itself.

OK. I renamed it to "pnp: add a shutdown method to pnp drivers" as
it's not an input patch at all.
I see it actually has your signed-off-by: in it already.
Now I need to work out where that winbond patch got to.

Yes, risky... God knows who can do list_for_each(->children) and expect to
find the sub-threads. But this is obviously good optimization/simplification.
It is just ugly to place sub-threads on ->children list, this buys nothing
but slown downs do_wait(). (this was needed, afaics, to handle ptraced but
not re-parented threads a long ago).

Only the first patch is "ptrace" ;)

Well that's never prevented us from merging stuff before.
Thanks, I'll disable the patches for now. Do we have a grip on what's
wrong and what needs to be done to fix things?

I think these make sense anyway,

(since Roland didn't reply yet)
I guess this patch should be updated.

Afaics, ->threadgroup_fork_lock doesn't really work, we can race with exec.
list_for_each_entry_rcu() loops in these patches are not safe.
And in fact, personally I dislike even atomic_inc(&sighand->count). Just
consider sys_unshare(CLONE_SIGHAND). Yes, this code is a joke, but still.
Sadly, I don't have any ideas how to fix this... I'd wish I had a time
to at least try to find the solution ;)

Agreed.

We do have a newer version now with various fixes and clean-ups.
But the current version does not play nice with ptrace (does not
even exclude ptrace any more). Without at least the ptrace
exclusion, using both utrace modules and ptrace might lead to a
confused kernel or BUG_ON hits.
Past feedback tells us that we need some in-tree users of the
utrace API to get merged too. Frank was working on such a thing,
and the IBM folks may have another such thing, but I don't know
the present status of those modules.
Oleg is working feverishly on revamping ptrace using utrace.
Other past feedback has suggested this is what people want to see
to justify utrace going in. That ptrace work is still a bit away
from being ready even for -mm submission. We're pretty sure that
we will do some more changes in the utrace core to make that work
well, so utrace merged first would be sure to get more changes
later (probably including some API differences).
Thanks,
Roland
