While Greg is at this, the changelogs also really don't really follow the
kernel changelog standards (line wrapping, etc.).

Thank you both for your fast feedback. I really appreciate it.

Since this is my first contribution to the Linux Kernel I am not
pretty sure what I have to do. Is there anywhere a guideline how I get
a "signed-off"? I sent the mail to the addresses I found via
`scripts/get_maintainer.pl -f .mailmap` since I expected those people
to be somehow interested in this file. What other steps can I take?

I don't understand the point regarding the changelog standards -- what
do you mean with that? I changed the .mailmap file and oriented myself
on what was already there... How can I improve the file to fit to the
Linux standards? Some hints?

While I did this mainly for my thesis, I thought that my work might be
useful for others as well... so if you can give me some hints, I will
glad spending some more time and correct the file so that it fits to
the guidelines.

Please read the file, Documentation/SubmittingPatches for what the line,
"Signed-off-by:" means and what you are agreeing to there, as well as
how to properly submit a patch for inclusion in the kernel.

Why add these entries at all again?

For instance, my name is listed once in your patch.
and I don't see a reason it should be entered at all.

Many developers share a common name and some of
these entries may be not be correct.

Some developers purposefully use multiple email
addresses to allow direct responses to be categorized
on receipt.

Due to the research for my thesis, I tried to find out how many
developers are contributing to the Linux Kernel. First I thought that
this would be easy since there was already a mailmap file that
contained information about ambiguous email addresses. But I
discovered pretty fast that there were more names with typos etc. so
that I started to add those to the file as well.

You also have additions here for emails addresses that are now defunct.
At least two of the ibm.com additions you have are like that. People
move companies, etc.

Hello Josh,
thanks for your feedback.

I thought about the fact that over time people move companies. In my
case, I try to do some kind of time series analysis and thus it might
be interesting to see who was employed but now works as a freelancer
etc. Here, the opinion of other people who analyze the kernel such as
Wang Chen, Greg KH, or Jonathan Corbet might be interesting...

I also considered to always use only the current mail address but,
while it might help when e.g. searching for a person to contact for a
specific problem, in my eyes this would destroy parts of the history
of the LK. Hence, I decided to keep all addresses for each contact
while tried to condense/ correct them.

The mailmap file does not show this type of thing very well at all, and
I wouldn't recommend trying to keep it up to date this way. I say this
as someone who tries to keep track of who is working for whom. This
information changes over time, and as others have pointed out, some
people use multiple email addresses to categorize their submittions
(work vs. hobby) for legal and personal reasons.

Our database has been made public at times, so you should be using that
instead of trying to update the mailmap file.

So while it might be nice to update it, why do you want to do so? We
have updated and cleaned-up log files publicly if you want to use those
for research (they are in my github archive). Modifying things here
probably would not be a good idea.

The current version of the .mailmap file does only capture a fraction of errors
and ambiguity when looking at developers emails and names. Hence, this revised
version tries to address many more names and, as a result, to clarify maintainer
information. Issues addressed:
- Typos in names
- Typos in mails
- Mapping of ambiguous mail adresses (e.g. {[email protected], aa@home.(none),
[email protected],...} becomes {[email protected]}) but keeping LKML specific ones
- Mapping of names to entries with only email information
- Correct usage of special character (e.g. German umlauts)
- Harmonization of position and style of last name (no more all-caps names
like "First LAST" or those of "Last, First")
- No initials in names if not necessary
- Conversion of email addresses to lower case

Removing initials is probably not a good idea.

The real question is, why bother with all that stuff? Somebody sees
slightly inaccurate commit counts (in my case, that would be having
patches posted from [email protected] counted separately from those
posted from zeniv/committed in my trees)? Who _cares_?

If no-one would care about correct name mappings, why does the
.mailmap file in Git exist at all? Or websites like Linux Kernel Patch

http://www.linux.org.uk addresses shouldn't exist in the file at all. That's now
a website part of the Linux Foundation.

Thanks for the tip! I did not consider that... (*embarrassing*)

I diffed the output like you suggested (but changed the command to
"git shortlog -s -e" to have a list sorted by names and not by commits
since these change due to the fact that the authors are now better
mapped).
Than I started to sort the entries. You can find it at
<https://github.com/ruderphilipp/linux/blob/mailmap-changes/shortlog.diff>.
Since there a lot of them, I am not finished yet and it is still work
in progress. But I already found some minor errors that I will fix
before re-submitting again.

Where did you get some of these email addresses from? My "kroah.org"
entries never showed up in the kernel commit logs, nor are they valid email
addresses, so why did you add them to the file?

Hi Greg,
I re-checked that with the current linux git repository from Linux and
these email addresses are definitively there. I used "git log
--reverse --all --format='...%aN;%aE;%cN;cE' and dumped the full
history into a file. From there I analyze the file further with a
small script that gets all email addresses out of the dump and more or
less does a "uniq" call on names and mails giving an overview who used
which alias.

It seems as if the "@...kroa.org" addresses where just used when you
acted as a "committer" not as "author". Maybe that's the reason why
they never showed up in the commit logs?

I added them since they were used/ I found them in git log and because
they have a TLD (.org) - so I assumed that these are working
addresses.

ftp.linux.org.uk and zeniv.linux.org.uk are the same box; both variants
will work, but I prefer to use the latter in signoffs, etc.
http://www.linux.org.uk is an unrelated system and I have no idea if it'll
forward the mail sent to viro@... over to zeniv. No reason for it
to do so...

I am currently pretty busy with my thesis and as a result have not
much time to work on in. But will do again in approx. 3 weeks.

Whenever having some spare time, I work on

to not only find potential wrong mappings and to fix them for a final
patch but also to prepare an evidence for all these "disbelievers"
that my patch can improve overview and patch statistics. But this file
has 8600 lines -- so it is quite a lot of work for that I
unfortunately do not have time until my thesis is done.
