+* Rockchip I2S controller
+
+The I2S bus (Inter-IC sound bus) is a serial link for digital audio data transfer
+between devices in the system and be invented by Philips Semiconductor.
+
+Required properties:
+
+- compatible : should be one of the following.
+ "rockchip,rk3066-i2s": for rk3066
+ "rockchip,rk3188-i2s", "rockchip,rk3066-i2s" for rk3188
+ "rockchip,rk3288-i2s", "rockchip,rk3066-i2s" for rk3288
+- reg : physical base address of the controller and length of memory mapped
+ region.
+- interrupts : The interrupt number to the cpu. The interrupt specifier format
+ depends on the interrupt controller.
+- #address-cells : should be 1.
+- #size-cells : should be 0.
+- dmas : list of DMA controller phandle and DMA request line ordered pairs.
+- dma-names : identifier string for each DMA request line in the dmas property.
+ These strings correspond 1:1 with the ordered pairs in dmas.
+ Must include the following entries:
+ - rx:
+ - tx:
+- clocks : Handle to internal work clock and master clock output to IO.
+- clock-names :
+ - "i2s_hclk": support AHB bus interface
+ - "i2s_clk": work clock for i2s controller
+
+Example:
+
+aliases {
+ i2s0 = &i2s0;
+}
+
+i2s0: i2s@ff890000 {
+ compatible = "rockchip,rk3066-i2s";
+ reg = <0xff890000 0x10000>;
+ interrupts = <GIC_SPI 85 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH>;
+ #address-cells = <1>;
+ #size-cells = <0>;
+ dmas = <&pdma1 0>, <&pdma1 1>;
+ dma-names = "rx", "tx";
+ clock-names = "i2s_hclk", "i2s_clk";
+ clocks = <&cru HCLK_I2S0>, <&cru SCLK_I2S0>;

Can this be written in terms of clock-names, e.g.

- clocks: a list of phandle + clock-specifer pairs, one for each entry
in clock-names.

You can use sizeof(*i2s) here.

This wasn't mentioned in the binding.

No need for SND_SOC this is implicit for all drivers in sound/soc/. Also
allow the driver to be select when COMPILE_TEST is selected.

If those are two instances of the same I2S core just use one
snd_soc_dai_driver struct. There is no need for the driver to know or care
about how many instances of the core the system has.

We should try to avoid adding new users of the generic dmaengine pcm driver
that manually specify a snd_pcm_hardware struct. We now have the
infrastructure to autodiscover the capabilities of the DMA via the dmaengine
API.

New drivers really should just do snd_dmaengine_pcm_register(dev, NULL, 0);

You should never need to include this.

Perhaps use regmap? The main advantage would be the debug
infrastructure, though you could also use _update_bits() to reduce the
amount of time spent locked.

It's not reall a delay but rather a wait for the hardware to be ready I
guess? I'd expect to see some kind of message printed if we time out
without the hardware reporting it's ready - that probably means
something is going wrong.

It's not a serious problem but it's more normal to defer the writes to
the end of the function after all the error checking so that if the
function fails we don't end up writing out part of the configuration.

You should check (or just directly return) the error code here. It'd
also be good to define and validate a clock number, even if there's only
one right now, in order to avoid problems later on.

> +static int rockchip_i2s_set_clkdiv(struct snd_soc_dai *cpu_dai,

Why are you defining a set_clkdiv() operation? The code appears to just
support MCLK and BCLK dividers both of which the driver ought to be able
to just configure automatically.

Error checking.

No, this is seriously broken - a driver should never attempt to change
its own device name, just use the name that the kernel set.

Error checking and I'd expect this to happen before the device is
registered - remember that the device may be bound into a sound card
within the component registration so it has to be able to run normally.

Not neeed with devm_snd_soc_register_component().

Needs an empty terminating entry and the binding document listed two
compatible strings.

The framework is supposed to be able to figure this out automatically
with current kernels - if there's something not working there we should
at least understand what and ideally fix it.

Are you sure? This is a I2S driver, we can write the register directly,
do not through I2C or SPI bus.
Write a register is only a few instructions on ARM, but write through
regmap, it may take a long path.
I think it will just consume CPU power and make the whole thing more
complex.
Could you tell me what benefits we can get if use regmap? Or something I
just missing?

The main thing is the diagnostic infrastructure, plus the cache if you
find you need that for suspend and resume (which you didn't implement
yet) - that's the main reason things use regmap for memory mapped
registers. There is some overhead but it's not *that* big.

Hi Mark:

Since regmap_update_bits is int style, I have to error check every time after call it.
Also I find that the tegra_i2s.c call the function without error checking,

Could you tell me the right way to handle the regmap_update_bits ?

With memory mapped I/O there's no real point in checking for errors so
if you kno0w your device is memory mapped you can get away with just
ignoring them.

+* Rockchip I2S controller
+
+The I2S bus (Inter-IC sound bus) is a serial link for digital
+audio data transfer between devices in the system.
+
+Required properties:
+
+- compatible: should be one of the followings
+ - "rockchip,rk3066-i2s": for rk3066
+ - "rockchip,rk3188-i2s", "rockchip,rk3066-i2s": for rk3188
+ - "rockchip,rk3288-i2s", "rockchip,rk3066-i2s": for rk3288
+- reg: physical base address of the controller and length of memory mapped
+ region.
+- interrupts: The interrupt number to the cpu. The interrupt specifier format
+ depends on the interrupt controller.
+- #address-cells: should be 1.
+- #size-cells: should be 0.
+- dmas: DMA specifiers for tx and rx dma. See the DMA client binding,
+ Documentation/devicetree/bindings/dma/dma.txt
+- dma-names: DMA request names should include "tx" and "rx" if present.
+- clocks: a list of phandle + clock-specifer pairs, one for each entry in clock-names.
+- clock-names: Shall be "i2s_hclk" for I2S bus and "i2s_clk" for master clock
+
+Example, for rk3288 I2S controller:
+
+i2s0: i2s@ff890000 {
+ compatible = "rockchip,rk3066-i2s", "rockchip,rk3288-i2s";
+ reg = <0xff890000 0x10000>;
+ interrupts = <GIC_SPI 85 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH>;
+ #address-cells = <1>;
+ #size-cells = <0>;
+ dmas = <&pdma1 0>, <&pdma1 1>;
+ dma-names = "rx", "tx";
+ clock-names = "i2s_hclk", "i2s_clk";
+ clocks = <&cru HCLK_I2S0>, <&cru SCLK_I2S0>;
+};

Subject: [PATCH v2 2/2] ASoC: add driver for Rockchip RK3xxx I2S controller

From: Jianqun Xu <[email protected]>

Add driver for i2s controller found on rk3066, rk3168 and rk3288
processors from rockchip.

Tested on the RK3288 SDK board.

Changes since v1:

Adviced by Varka Bhadram:
- proper indentation for function arguments

Adviced by Mark Rutland:
- replace sizeof(struct rk_i2s_dev) with sizeof(*i2s)

Adviced by Mark Brown:
- not to include head files which are unused actually in driver
- modify i2s_tx_status/i2s_rx_status to more meaningful with tx_start/rx_start
- use regmap_update_bits to reduce the amount of time spent locked
- add warning for possible error while waiting for the hardware to be ready
- error checking for clk_set_rate
- error checking for i2s_runtime_resume
- remove set_clkdiv operation, clock setting will do it

Adviced by Lars-Peter Clausen:
- no need SND_SOC for SND_SOC_ROCKCHIP, also allow the driver to be select when COMPILE_TEST is selected
- not to include head files which are unused actually in driver
- I2S core just use one snd_soc_dai_driver struct

- delete rockchip_pcm.c and related codes, use generic dmaengine API, adviced by Lars-Peter and Mark Brown
- a driver should never attempt to change its own device name, just use the name that the kernel set, adviced by Lars-Peter and Mark Brown

Just state _which_ interrupt this is from the view of the device.

Just say:

- dma-names: should include "tx" and "rx"

If we need more DMAs or descriptions thereof, expand into a bulleted
list.

> +- clocks: a list of phandle + clock-specifer pairs, one for each entry in clock-names.

This was easier to read as a bulleted list than inline:

- clock-names: should include:
- "i2s_hclk" for the I2S bus clock
- "i2s_clk" for the master clock

This is the wrong way around per the documentation of the compatible
string.

Mark.

Add driver for i2s controller found on rk3066, rk3168 and rk3288
processors from rockchip.

Tested on the RK3288 SDK board.

Signed-off-by: Jianqun Xu <[email protected]>

changes since v2:
- replace 4 with DMA_SLAVE_BUSWIDTH_4_BYTES
- modify supported rate to SNDRV_PCM_RATE_8000_192000
- rename head file to "rockchi_i2s.h"

changes since v1:
- proper indentation for function arguments, adviced by Varka Bhadram
- replace sizeof(struct rk_i2s_dev) with sizeof(*i2s), adviced by Mark Rutland
- not to include head files which are unused actually in driver, adviced by Mark Brown
- modify i2s_tx_status/i2s_rx_status to more meaningful with tx_start/rx_start, adviced by Mark Brown
- use regmap_update_bits to reduce the amount of time spent locked, adviced by Mark Brown
- add warning for possible error while waiting for the hardware to be ready, adviced by Mark Brown
- error checking for clk_set_rate, adviced by Mark Brown
- error checking for i2s_runtime_resume, adviced by Mark Brown
- remove set_clkdiv operation, clock setting will do it, adviced by Mark Brown
- no need SND_SOC for SND_SOC_ROCKCHIP, also allow the driver to be select when COMPILE_TEST is selected, adviced by Lars-Peter Clausen
- not to include head files which are unused actually in driver, adviced by Lars-Peter Clausen
- I2S core just use one snd_soc_dai_driver struct, adviced by Lars-Peter Clausen
- delete rockchip_pcm.c and related codes, use generic dmaengine API, adviced by Lars-Peter and Mark Brown
