Hi all,
I use the form I've been requested to use to report the kernel bug below.
[1.] One line summary of the problem:
When I reboot with kexec, my computer cold reboots after "Starting new
kernel" (i.e. I need to get through the POST and GRUB), instead of the
new kernel being booted instantly.
[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
To reproduce, install kexec-tools, set it up so that it shall try to
reboot the actual mainline kernel. Then issue a kexec reboot (if kexec
installed a "reboot" hook script, just issue "reboot"). You should see
a "Starting new kernel" message before the reported problem presents
itself.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I didn't experience the same on my
other machines, so I suspect some hardware-dependent issue.
The problem is introduced by KASLR and is present on kernels compiled
with CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE.
[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):
[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
Linux version 3.18.0-031800rc7-generic (apw@gomeisa) (gcc version
4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5) ) #201411302035 SMP Mon Dec 1
01:36:38 UTC 2014
[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic
information resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)
N/A (I have no Oops message, or at least it's not visible).
[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
problem (if possible)
See #2 for reproduce instructions, no shell script is required.
[7.] Environment
$ lsb_release -rd

[X.] Other notes, patches, fixes, workarounds:
Downstream report (Ubuntu Launchpad):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1396889
With kernel bisection, I've found, the first bad commit is
8ab3820fd5b2896d66da7bb2a906bc382e63e7bc x86, kaslr: Return location
from decompress_kernel
which introduces KASLR.
http://lkml.kernel.org/r/[email protected]
The problem only presents itself when CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE=y.
For workaround, there is a "nokaslr" kernel parameter to disable the
feature, even if the kernel was compiled with CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE.

Need to add: as I tested today, unfortunately the "nokaslr" kernel
option doesn't work around the bug. If a kernel was compiled with
CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE, it won't properly kexec on my ThinkPad T400,
even if the "nokaslr" kernel option is provided!
This could actually help to find the bug, as whatever bad happens must
happen before the kernel checks for the presence of the "nokaslr"
kernel parameter.

I suspect you're encountering a subset of the same problems as
described in this thread:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/9/30/90
If you can test those patches, that may help demonstrate their utility.
Thanks!

Bang ji le! It works with the patch you linked, xiexie!
I suggest it to be merged into mainline.
Anyway, is there a way to get sure that KASLR actually works now?
(I.e. how do I know if the kernel is really loaded to a random
address?)
Do you have any idea what might be different with my ThinkPad T400
that it is the only one of my machines affected?

I usually check the elf header of /proc/kcore which represents the
physical memory of the system and is stored in the ELF core file format.
Without kaslr, the kernel text mapping should be in virtual addr
0xffffffff81000000. With kaslr enabled, the addr would be anywhere
between 0xffffffff80000000 and 0xffffffffc0000000.

That's weird. I suggest you check the config file for that running
kernel in your ThinkPad T400. If you have below config, that means your
kernel support kaslr and enable it by default, unless you specify
nokaslr in cmdline to disalbe it.
CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE=y
CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE_MAX_OFFSET=0x40000000
Different kind of machines should not affect this.
