When I do 'lspci | grep -i audio', I get this:
0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM AC'97
Audio (rev 04)
Unfortunately, every effort has failed to get the slightest peep out. I
have tried following the instructions on the Gentoo site (with my own
guesses about what to do differently for 2.6 kernels), but I don't get
any sound. Also, the "alsaconf" utility says it doesn't find any audio
devices.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks!

I would guess it should be supported by snd_intel8x0. What are the
exact device ID's (shown by lspci -n)?

Thanks.
This is the audio device:

and it looks like sound/pci/intel8x0.c should support it:
static struct pci_device_id snd_intel8x0_ids[] = {
/* ... */
{ 0x8086, 0x2445, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, DEVICE_INTEL }, /* 82801BA */
What happens when you load snd_intel8x0?

you will have to kill it after about 20 sec or so with

then serach over the output alsa.strace and look for

I had compiled it directly in the kernel. Does it not work unless it's
a module?
Alright, thanks for the suggestions [snipped]. I managed to get a
number of the sound-related things to work. Unfortunately, it still
doesn't work 100%.
Now, KDE sounds seem to work, for instance, the bell sound in konsole
when you try to backspace too many times. However, that sound comes out
noisy, raspy, and the wrong pitch.
I tried using 'aplay' with some wav files. When I just do 'aplay
<filename>', I get silence. When I do 'strace aplay <filename>', I get
lots of noise and output like this:
puck tim # strace aplay elements.wav
execve("/usr/bin/aplay", ["aplay", "elements.wav"], [/* 82 vars */]) = 0

I would suggest you try the alsa mail lists now to
see if they have any more suggestions.

Could be a driver problem.

Timothy,
Perhaps check that your BIOS hasn't disabled it, or anything isn't disabling
it at boot time with 'setpci ... command=0'.
---
When I do 'lspci | grep -i audio', I get this:
0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM AC'97
Audio (rev 04)
Unfortunately, every effort has failed to get the slightest peep out. I
have tried following the instructions on the Gentoo site (with my own
guesses about what to do differently for 2.6 kernels), but I don't get
any sound. Also, the "alsaconf" utility says it doesn't find any audio
devices.
Can anyone help me with this?
