Hi guys,
I have a tyan s3992 h2000 with single barcelona amd quad core cpu (the
other cpu socket is empty). cat /proc/cpuinfo shows amd quad core
processor
but core : 1....ive compiled the kernel from scratch with smp and
amd64 + the numa stuff. i also tried debian etchs amd64 smp kernel and
same result.
is amd barcelona quad core cpu not yet supported or is it something else ?
Thanks for any insight. im completely stumped. ive dealt with
mutliprocessing machines before and have a couple of dual cores which
are fine with the
exact same kernel configs. my amd tk-53 x2 turions show 2 cores in cpuinfo....

Hi,
this sort of issue is usually best diagnosed when we can get to see the
dmesg output... since quite often the kernel will note errors and
warnings there that will give a clue of what is going on. Would you
mind attaching your dmesg on the broken machine to a mail ?
Greetings,
Arjan van de Ven

The bootstrap protocol for Barcelona is a little different from older Opterons,
so an older BIOS that doesn't know the new protocol won't be able to bring up
any CPU other than the bootstrap processor. My wild guess is that this is
what's happening and a BIOS update will fix it, but as Arjan said, please post
dmesg when reporting bugs like this.

Confused. Why should that cause the kernel to misreport the core
count?
i have no clue. thats why im not a kernel dev. :)
but its fixed now by a simple gart setting to disabled in bios so its
ok. mobo is s3992 tyan h2000 and bios is downloadable on tyans
website..2.x i think.

A few unrelated observations about Barcelona support...

This is probably wrong. The TSC is on the northbridge on Barcelona chips, so
every core on the die should be in sync. Hypothetically you could have
different speed northbridges in different sockets, but we've never tried very
hard to support that case anyway. We should probably be marking the TSC as
stable on Barcelona chips.

We should probably also implement an SSE5 function to take advantage of the
128-bit SSE operations supported on newer processors.

Hmmm... perhaps we're not handling the new mmconfig stuff correctly? Or maybe
the BIOS isn't.

This code probably needs an update for Barcelona.

An update here for SSE5 might be in order as well.

It's a little more complicated. Stable clock is only guaranteed as long
as the CPUs all run on the same clock crystal. That is true
when they're all on the current motherboard. But at least for K8
there were several systems that consist of multiple motherboards
and HT cables inbetween them (like all the 8 socket systems).
On those the TSCs can drift too with Fam10h. I'm not aware
of any of those shipping yet, but since it's essentially
the same platform as K8 they will appear sooner or later.
So far we lack a reliable way to detect this condition. If it could
be detected it would be possible to switch to TSC timing
for the single motherboard systems.
However after some bad experiences in the past I personally would only
do that after such a system demonstrates synchronized TSC for at least
a week under varying workloads.

SSE5 doesn't exist in Fam10h
In general the optimized x86 RAID functions are mostly quite suboptimal
on my testing and do not actually do what they promise (E.g. the cache
avoiding functions do not actually avoid the cache fully etc.) I had a
rewrite of them in C some time ago which was faster on most CPUs
except on Core2 for so far unknown reasons. Needs more work.

Would it not be as simple as looking at the BIOS provided topology
information? If nr sockets > 4 assume multiple board.
Of course one could run a multi board solution and not utilize all
sockets, in which case the heuristic would fail, but I guess buying such
an expensive solution and then not sticking in the cpus is rather rare.

There is no reason multiple two socket boards couldn't be connected
with HT cables to form a larger system. Then you might end up
with a 4 socket system with multiple oscillators.
