hmm, looks like a module address.

Eh? How come the compiler didn't inline __constant_c_and_count_memset?
What compiler version are you using?

The stack trace seems to contain lots of moduleish addresses too.

But they were skipped by kksymoops.

My guess would be that something has tried to reference a module which isn't
there any more.

Did you at any time unload a module? If so, which one?

I see __constant_c_and_count_memset in oprofile output here too:

Yes, odd -

I'm using plain old gcc-3.2 as supplied by Red Hat

I last unloaded a module while running 2.4.21-pre5-ac1

I hadn't done so in 2.4.64 - at least not manually...

It was seen before:

Here is the cure: force_inline will guarantee inlining.

To use _only_ with functions which meant to be almost
optimized away to nothing but are large and gcc might decide
they are _too_ large for inlining.

More to come if ok'ed for inclusion.

Well I'd consider this a workaround for a rampant compiler bug. It's just
weird that it refuses to inline a function like that. Having to make 10,000
edits to the kernel tree to work around this does not appeal.

Cannot we just stick:

#define inline __inline__ __attribute__((always_inline))

in kernel.h?

I second this, because that's how we actually use this keyword in
the kernel. We don't mean "please inline, if you can" but
actually "inline it, or I'll force you harder!".

It doesn't look like at first glance, but it actually is the
cleanest solution for recent GCCs.

Even better would be a "-Winline-limit=X" to warn for the cases,
where we should review the tradeoff.

Are you using DRI? There is some evidence that exiting and restarting X
will not correctly re-initialize the DRI stuff in the kernel, and
_massive_ kernel memory corruption can ensure when the new X server
starts.

At which point you'll get random oopses etc.

Looks like you at least have the DRI kernel modules there.

Try to see if the problem goes away if you start X without DRI support
(ie remove the "Load 'dri'" or whatever from the XF86Config file, or
start up in a mode that DRI doesn't support, like 8bpp).

Yes, of course, I want altlantis to look _good_

That does indeed seem to be the scenario - it
was rock solid and busy for a day, but when X
was killed and restarted everything went right
to hell -

OK, I'll try it like that -
