Subject: Kernel panic: Machine check exception

My new computer has been locking up, sooner or later, since I've been
using it. I happened to be at the console when it panic'd but it
didn't leave me with many details.

I have been getting these lockups using anything from 2.6.13-2.6.15-rc1-mm2.

Do I need to enable some debugging stuff and wait for it to happen again?

Here's what it had shown:

does it happen without the nvidia binary module as well?

As (I think I said) the kernel wasn't tainted at the time, I had not
even started X yet, so to answer your question it does happen without
the nvidia binary module.

Thats almost certainly a hardware fault. Machine checks are signalled
when the processor finds itself in a "can't happen" type of state.

Is there a good way to narrow it down? I guess running a badmem
program would be good to start with, otherwise ...(?).

A memory test may be worth doing but most machine checks indicate the
fault is more serious than bad memory.

Some of them are certainly not very serious in their effects. I get this
persistently, once every couple of months, on one of my machines (an
Athlon 4 with 768Mb of ECC RAM):

kernel: MCE: The hardware reports a non fatal, correctable incident occurred on CPU 0.
kernel: Bank 2: 940040000000017a

and I think it *is* a single slightly wobbly bit (the wobble being too
slight for memtest to find).

Nothing discernible has ever gone wrong as a result of that, right down
to repeated GCC enable-checking bootstrap-and-tests completing without
error (well, without any more than the expected XFAILs).

(I'm just *assuming* the `Bank 2' in this message refers to a bank of
RAM. Doubtless this assumption will now be shown to be utterly wrong and
a sign of terminal foolishness on my part... ;) )

Although on the Opteron that is usually what it is (as memory
errors can be reported through the machine check interface)

In this case bank 4 is the appropriate bank. Although the
other bits don't look right for a memory error. I wonder
if it is that darn iommu fault again.

To decode an Opteron machine_check you can look in
the bios and kernel programmers guide. (Possibly the
architecture but I think that is too generic) to see
what all of the bits mean.

It is a pain but is faster than poking blindly in
the dark.

Wow, I'm glad you send a reply. I've been looking into RMA'ing this
board and that would mean 3-4 weeks without a mobo, and I'd especially
hate to think it's actually not a hardware problem after waiting that
long. Something I did notice you said was about the IOMMU, which I
guess i should have mentioned in the first place errors out in the
beginning of the dmesg.

I get this same dmesg message in all kernels I have tried so far
(vanilla and -mm) 2.6.13+

Maybe I should compile it out for now? Unfortunately this lockup isn't
predictable, so I'm forced to just tool around until things lockup
(usually happens between 15 minutes and 12 hours :))

Also, I am merely a layperson. I just took a quick look over
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/26094.PDF
and it's unreadable by myself.

mcelog --ascii decodes the "final" machine checks output
by the 64bit kernel. The normal recoverable machine checks
should be decoded at runtime assuming your distribution
set it up right (normally into /var/log/mcelog)

That also works on kernel panic?

The automatic logging doesn't work during panic, but if you
redirected the output of the kernel panic to some other machine
(using serial console etc) you can pipe that log
into it for decoding.

You know, I have to say you _have_ to be right. While the MCE happens
at random times, since I've compiled without IOMMU in it has been
smooth sailing, when normally I would have locked up a few times by
now (Right after I send out this reply surely it will lockup). So, I
will end this thread by saying with that if you're using a Gigabyte
K8N51GMF-9 it's advisable to turn off IOMMU for now, if you get
lockups.
