nono, that part is already fixed in my patch (from mm-1). So it must be
something lese.

But the error you report:
drivers/perfctr/x86.c: In function `finalise_backpatching':
drivers/perfctr/x86.c:1137: error: parse error before '{' token
is _exactly_ the error you reported before, and it occurs on a line that
assigns CPU_MASK_NONE (via a #define of perfctr_cpus_forbidden_mask) to
a local variable, and this is exactly the error one gets when assigning
the broken version of CPU_MASK_NONE, which was missing the (cpumask_t)
cast, to a local variable.
Somehow, something you are reporting is incorrect. Or else I am more
mistaken than I am accustomed to being.
Please verify that the above error is indeed the one you are seeing,
and that doing the following command in this build tree:
grep -1 define.CPU_MASK_NONE include/linux/cpumask.h
produces the following output, including the (cpumask_t) cast:
#define CPU_MASK_NONE \
((cpumask_t){ { \

| But the error you report:
Yeah _thats_ the confusing thing. The lines 100% okay, I checked that
twice, with grep and with opening the file. After I patched 2.6.6 source
with the 2.6.7-rc3 and the -mm1 patch I checked that first because I had
problems with that at office. I was surprised to see it fixed, so I made
an cp .config and make oldconfig and make bzIamge modules, but I got the
same error. So there must be something else wrong
lg, clemens
I'll be happy to help as much as I can.

Try doing the make with V=1
make V=1 drivers/perfctr/x86.o
Determine the exact compilation line (perhaps a couple hundred chars
long) that issues the error, then manually repeat that line manually
(cut+paste), adding the option "-save-temps".
This will look something similar to the following, which I generated for
a different file, different compilation environment (I added the wrapping
and backslashes for display purposes here):
gcc -save-temps -Wp,-MD,kernel/.cpuset.o.d -nostdinc -iwithprefix \
include -D__KERNEL__ -Iinclude -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs \
-fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -pipe -msoft-float \
-mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=pentium4 -mregparm=3 \
-Iinclude/asm-i386/mach-default -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer \
-DKBUILD_BASENAME=cpuset -DKBUILD_MODNAME=cpuset -c -o kernel/cpuset.o \
kernel/cpuset.c
Then look at the ./x86.i file (in top directory), which is the
preprocessor output, to see if the (cpumask_t) cast is present.

yeah I have the cputmask_t here:
typedef struct { unsigned long bits[(((1)+32 -1)/32)]; } cpumask_t;
extern cpumask_t _unused_cpumask_arg_;

a lot of static .. cpu_set, call, etc

No - look to see if the __cast__ is there, the (cpumask_t) term
that was needed in the define of CPU_MASK_NONE:
#define CPU_MASK_NONE \
((cpumask_t){ { \
[0 ... BITS_TO_LONGS(NR_CPUS)-1] = 0UL \
} })
This would be on the preprocessor code that is generated from line
1137 of drivers/perfctr/x86.c, where the error is generated. This is
the source line that looks like:
old_mask = perfctr_cpus_forbidden_mask;
The preprocessor output from this line in the x86.i file will look
something like this, hopefully:
Good:
old_mask = ((cpumask_t){ { [0 ... (((8)+32 -1)/32)-1] = 0UL } });
Not like this:
Bad:
old_mask = { { [0 ... (((8)+32 -1)/32)-1] = 0UL } };
(the '8' varies with your NR_CPUS configuration).

Much simpler method is to just use:
make drivers/perfctr/x86.i
Same goes for .lst (mixed assembly and c)
and for .s (pure assembler)

okay, I have the "Bad" one. Whatever that means, it seems bad :)

Ok - that's progress.
Then whatever cpumask.h file you are using to compile that code does not
have the fix you think it has.
If you're still stuck, send the output of doing the four commands:
rm -f drivers/perfctr/x86.i
make V=1 drivers/perfctr/x86.i | fmt -s
grep -2 define.CPU_MASK_NONE include/linux/cpumask.h
grep -2 old_mask.= drivers/perfctr/x86.i
By way of example, when I do these four commands, I get:
$ rm -f drivers/perfctr/x86.i
$ make V=1 drivers/perfctr/x86.i | fmt -s
make -f scripts/Makefile.build obj=scripts/basic
make -f scripts/Makefile.build obj=scripts
make -f scripts/Makefile.build obj=drivers/perfctr drivers/perfctr/x86.i
gcc -E -Wp,-MD,drivers/perfctr/.x86.i.d -nostdinc -iwithprefix
include -D__KERNEL__ -Iinclude -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes
-Wno-trigraphs -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -pipe
-msoft-float -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=pentium4
-mregparm=3 -Iinclude/asm-i386/mach-default -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer
-DKBUILD_BASENAME=x86 -DKBUILD_MODNAME=x86 -o drivers/perfctr/x86.i
drivers/perfctr/x86.c
$ grep -2 define.CPU_MASK_NONE include/linux/cpumask.h
#endif
#define CPU_MASK_NONE \
((cpumask_t){ { \
[0 ... BITS_TO_LONGS(NR_CPUS)-1] = 0UL \
$ grep -2 old_mask.= drivers/perfctr/x86.i
cpumask_t old_mask;
old_mask = ((cpumask_t){ { [0 ... (((8)+32 -1)/32)-1] = 0UL } });
clear_perfctr_cpus_forbidden_mask();

No need to apologize. It was my screwup that
got you in this pickle in the first place.
Thank-you for the opportunity to let me to a
little penance for my sins ;).
