May I suggest running "vmstat 1" while this is happening? Looking at the
waitio time vs. transfer rates might reveal something. If it all looks
the same post a small section, if it starts off looking like one thing
and then changes as buffers fill, data from start to steady state might
assist someone in helping.

I can't say that I see any such thing with ext[23], so it may be a
reiser issue and someone else will have to help. Did you look at the
logs to see that there are no useful warnings there?

Here you go. I hope you can see anything. (I attached the file as well...):

Beginning and end the system is idle and then I start writing down the
file. During that time thunderbird gets unusable.

Nothing in the logs, unfortunately.

Cheers,

Prakash

It looks like it may be a CPU scheduler issue: Nothing needs to
be read, no swap activity, enough free memory.

However, it also does look like there is a lot of CPU power free,
which makes the cpu scheduler less likely... Maybe interrupts are
using a lot of CPU time or latency, and that is being hidden from
CPU time accounting.

I think Ingo did notice quite large latencies in disk interrupts,
although whether that would be enough to make thunderbird "unusable",
I'm not sure.

I see this behaviour with default scheduler in vanilla and with staircase...

I tried preempt (inkl preempt "big kernel lock" in ck) which doesn't
avoid above. (I don't rember whether it was better, though.)

So I did some further tests with my new hd. I put my home dir onto it
using different file systems and this was the result:

- reiserfs: craps out, as explained
- ext2: much better but tb gets unusable for short periods of time, as well
- xfs: I couldn't get tb unuseable here. It gets much slower, but still
usable

So it seems at partially (if not entirely?) be related to the
filesystem. Could it be other parts of the kernel which are not doing
its job properly ans just exhibiting some fs's weakness?
