Subject: [patch] Real-Time Preemption, -RT-2.6.12-rc5-V0.7.47-10

i have released the -V0.7.47-10 Real-Time Preemption patch, which can be
downloaded from the usual place:

http://redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/

Changes:

- posix-timer fixes (George Anzinger )

- RPC timers fix (John Cooper)

- x64 build fix (Will Dyson)

to build a -V0.7.47-10 tree, the following patches have to be applied:

http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.11.tar.bz2
http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/patch-2.6.12-rc5.bz2

Since plain 2.6.12-rc5 will not build here, IPMI problems, does this
include the IPMI patches that will let it build here?

Or is this fix now included in the 2 snapshots with the .git suffix I
see there in the 2.6/snapshots directory and I should apply them
prior to the RT patch?

Have you tried loading and using some of these modules with older -RT
kernels? If they have been using init_MUTEX_LOCKED on RT semaphores,
they should have BUG & Oops. Recent -RT kernels have added extra check
for this during linking. The fact that you are prevented from building
these modules is a Good Thing(TM).
Maybe these drivers should be using completions instead of semaphores.
A quick fix would be changing the 'struct semaphore' to 'struct
compat_semaphore'.

I had no such error, applying the
realtime-preempt-2.6.12-rc5-V0.7.47-15 patch to rc5-git5 (other than
the Makefile, easily fixed, and lib/Kconfig.debug, as git5 had
already played with the location of the frame pointers option. I
left it at the git5 level, seemed to work. Its built, but not
rebooted to, working on wedding photo's for the neighbors ATM.

I used the "linux-2.6.12-rc5-git5-RT-V0.7.47-15" throughout _my_
scripts and the Makefile as the version number. I note your error
messages seem to indicate a miss-match there.

So many thanks to the original poster, whose message prompted me to
take another swing at it.

Ingo:

I had little problem in applying this patch to 2.6.12-rc5-git5 after
deleting those 10 or so bogus lines, the only real failure being the
Makefile, easily fixed.

I took the defaults for all the new stuff in a make oldconfig started
with the .config from rc5-git5.

I've rebooted to it & it generally feels good, but the missus came in
just now and said something about the video quality of my home tv
channel, and I found that I do not have video from tvtime now, only
audio, and a very noisey messages log when tvtime is running (git5 by
itself ran tvtime ok), plus a lot of output on the VT that started
boinc & einstein@home, something about a memory being exceeded. But
its at 1 second intervals and not copy/pastable across a ctl+alt+F1
to ctl+alt+F7 switch.

That I've stopped & restarted from an xwindow, hopeing the messages
will repeat shortly.

Ah, heres one:
2005-05-31 12:12:13 [Einstein@Home] result
H1_1262.4__1262.8_0.1_T00_Test02_3: memory usage 125263872.000000
exceeds limit 70000000.000000

Which, due to the decimal display format, makes zip sense to me. I've
stopped it.

.config, pieces of logs available for the asking.
