I am compiling kernel 2.4.0, and I am getting the following error
during the 'make install' part of the build:
ld -m elf_i386 -T /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/vmlinux.lds -e stext arch/i386/kernel/head.o arch/i386/kernel/init_task.o init/main.o init/version.o \

I have checked all assembler packages, and they all seem to be installed.
I am running Debian sid and all packages are up-to-date.
Can anyone help me with this error?
Thanks in advance

Are you sure your binutils is up to date? This is eerily reminiscent of
the --oformat change documented in 2.10.91.0.2-2 ...

New binutils on an old kernel. Change -oformat to --oformat.

Or even better, change v2.4.0 to v2.4.13pre5 or v2.4.12ac3.
