Hi,

I haven't been able to reproduce complete hangs, but with your proggy
adapted to my quad, _and_ the addition of a SCHED_NORMAL hog, I can
reproduce some very bad interactivity, including massive character
repeats while attempting to type, and general "lurchiness" (_bad_ wakeup
latency). I'll poke it with a sharp stick or two.

Would you mind trying the below?

Impact: fix latency issues when SCHED_IDLE tasks are queued.

Exclude SCHED_IDLE tasks from wakeup preemption, ensure that same will
always be wakeup preempted, and exclude them from being buddies so they
will only be selected via their vruntime.

Yeah, I was able to trigger the same freeze again once on my desktop,
but it appears to be harder to trigger now. I couldn't get my program to
freeze the system, but one of the times I suspended then resumed BOINC,
it happened.

While experimenting on my laptop, things got into a funny state where
konsole froze, then gnome-terminal froze, so I just started launching
xterms. pgrep and pidof would freeze and never terminate. ps axl froze
after listing process 23681, which was a BOINC process. The next
process, 23682, was another BOINC process. Going into /proc/23682 and
running ls -l as root froze the shell. I figured out that ls -l exe was
enough to freeze it. I couldn't shut down BOINC because process 23682
wouldn't close, and kill -9 did nothing to it. top, which actually did
work, showed that process just continuing to run with around 100% CPU
time. I had to power cycle the system.

I'll try Mike's "more complete" patch on top of 2.6.29-rc1 and see what
that does.

Don't bother. I just tried a SCHED_IDLE make -j8 and had character
repeats while typing. Must be another spot.

Hrmph, what an annoying problem. The below works pretty well, but
_still_ has latency problems in some circumstances.

The more I look at this, the more I think these guys _really_ want to be
a separate class. The problem is the incredible rate of min_vruntime
advancement creating absurdly huge spreads.

Hm, maybe I could advance min_vruntime at nice 0 when these guys are
running, only advance their vruntime at warp 512, but that seems awfully
hackish. If they were a separate class, they could use the full nice
spectrum instead of being merely mega-nice.

A separate class has its own set of problems: starvation, etc.

What about increasing the weight of SCHED_IDLE tasks from 1 to 2 or 3?
That still makes them mega-nice (which is more than enough), but should
make the math a lot less borderline.

The weight is currently 2, inv_weight is 1 << 31, which is correct.

I implemented the advance min_vruntime at nice 0 thing, and that seems
to work fine. SCHED_IDLE tasks slam right as they execute, but check
out how _far_ right they slam. This was with the build pinned to cpu 3,
so no migration issues. I'll try weight of 3.

then move it up to 5 or so perhaps? We are hitting limits of 64-bit math
here.

OK, the below seems to cure all of the problems I've encountered, please
take it out for a spin.

The rate of advance thing in set_task_cpu() seems to have been a case of
fixing the symptom instead of the problem. Perhaps this needs more
thought, but my box says "Red-Herring" ;-)

The real problem (excluding the SCHED_IDLE specific problems), is that
update_min_vruntime() doesn't work quite as intended, and will slam
min_vruntime far right if load balancing etc places a task which is far
right of the currently running task on the runqueue. If the currently
running, and up to this point the min_vruntime pace setter, is a hog,
any task waking to this runqueue after min_vruntime leaps forward has to
wait for the hog to consume the gap. In the case of SCHED_IDLE tasks,
that gap can be huge, but even with a nice 19 tasks it can be quite
large and painful.

Removing the if (vruntime == cfs_rq->min_vruntime) test, which will be
true if the currently running task is the pace setter, cured it for me.

If this cures your woes (and Peter acks it), I'll split and submit.

OK, so we have 1 running task A (which is obviously curr and the tree is
equally obviously empty).

A nicely chugs along, doing its thing, carrying min_vruntime along as it
goes.

Then some whacko speed freak SCHED_IDLE task gets inserted due to SMP
balancing, which is very likely far right, in that case

update_curr
update_min_vruntime
cfs_rq->rb_leftmost := true (the crazy task sitting in a tree)
vruntime = se->vruntime

and voila, min_vruntime is waaay right of where it ought to be.

OK, so why did I write it like that to begin with...

Aah, yes.

Say we've just dequeued current

schedule
deactivate_task(prev)
dequeue_entity
update_min_vruntime

Then we'll set

vruntime = cfs_rq->min_vruntime;

we find !cfs_rq->curr, but do find someone in the tree. Then we _must_
do vruntime = se->vruntime, because

vruntime = min_vruntime(vruntime := cfs_rq->min_vruntime, se->vruntime)

will not advance vruntime, and cause lags the other way around (which we
fixed with that initial patch: 1af5f730fc1bf7c62ec9fb2d307206e18bf40a69
(sched: more accurate min_vruntime accounting).

Which leads me to suggest the following

This did the trick! I can't make it freeze anymore, with BOINC or with
forkdie, and the system remains responsive even with dozens of idle
priority tasks hogging all spare CPU time. It's great!

If you then fold this on top we have 3 patches, alas not along the lines
that would have been pretty:

- update_min_vruntime fix
- SCHED_IDLE weight change
- SCHED_IDLE vs SCHED_OTHER isolation

OK, so we have 1 running task A (which is obviously curr and the tree is
equally obviously empty).

A nicely chugs along, doing its thing, carrying min_vruntime along as it
goes.

Then some whacko speed freak SCHED_IDLE task gets inserted due to SMP
balancing, which is very likely far right, in that case

update_curr
update_min_vruntime
cfs_rq->rb_leftmost := true (the crazy task sitting in a tree)
vruntime = se->vruntime

and voila, min_vruntime is waaay right of where it ought to be.

OK, so why did I write it like that to begin with...

Aah, yes.

Say we've just dequeued current

schedule
deactivate_task(prev)
dequeue_entity
update_min_vruntime

Then we'll set

vruntime = cfs_rq->min_vruntime;

we find !cfs_rq->curr, but do find someone in the tree. Then we _must_
do vruntime = se->vruntime, because

vruntime = min_vruntime(vruntime := cfs_rq->min_vruntime, se->vruntime)

will not advance vruntime, and cause lags the other way around (which we
fixed with that initial patch: 1af5f730fc1bf7c62ec9fb2d307206e18bf40a69
(sched: more accurate min_vruntime accounting).
