Subject: [PATCH] eeepc-laptop: enable camera by default

From: Pekka Enberg <[email protected]>

If we leave the camera disabled by default, userspace programs (e.g.
Skype, Cheese) leave the user out in the cold saying that the machine "has
no camera." Therefore, it's better to enable camera by default and let
people who really don't want it just disable the thing.

Hi,
First, I think a one line
set_acpi(CM_ASL_CAMERA, 1);
with a small comment is better. (If it fails, it's because there no
camera, so we don't mind).

Anyway, I'm not sure it's a good idea to enable the camera by default.
It depends how many
power the camera is using (when idle). Coud you check that (with power
top maybe ?).

Thanks

OK, I've included an updated version of the patch.

People who prefer power savings over functional camera can always
disable it. If you look at the amount of "my camera doesn't" work bug
reports, I think it's pretty evident that we should enable it by default
or provide a config option that does it.

That said, I am more than happy to measure this but I need a little bit
more information to get started as I have never used powertop. So what
is it exactly you want me to do?

Ok, your right, I'll apply that one

PowerTop (with a corretly configured kernel) will give you a power
usage estimate.

CONFIG_NO_HZ=y
CONFIG_TIMER_STATS=y
CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL=y

For propers results, shutdown all services and just keep a shell
(without X or network).
You can also test that with and without the camera driver.

Hmm, this relies on good acpi battery information, I hope your EeePC
is better than mine in that regard.

The ideal solution is if USB auto-suspend could be used to save the
same amount. Google says there was a patch for uvcvideo last year
[1]. I'll see what the current status is on my model and report back
:-).

I did not see a power usage estimate. I am running PowerTOP 1.11 that
comes with Ubuntu 9.04. So I am not sure if what I did is what you
wanted me to do but I ran "powertop -t 60 -d" with camera enabled and
disabled and here are the results.

Also, when I run plain powertop, it keeps complaining that some USB
device causes wakeups (probably the camera?) and suggests suspending.
But doing that doesn't seem to help things.

Thanks for the results, next week I'll do some test on a minimal setup.

Yeah, "no ACPI power usage estimate available", just like my eeepc.

/me hijacks thread

Unfortunately powertop is out of date now. The default behaviour is
not to suspend and it must be enabled on a per-device basis, because
there's lots of buggy hardware.

Ok. I didn't bother shutting down my system, but I get a similar
difference; 16 wakeups/s disabled v.s. 25 enabled. Anecdotally,
disabling the camera does help battery life, and presumably Asus had
good reason to implement it! (The shipped OS "fixes" the usability
problem by patching the camera apps).

BUT I found that autosuspend didn't seem to break anything, and
enabling it also got me down to 16 wakeups/s. I think this is ideal
because autosuspend is automatic so I can save power without manual
toggling.

Here's some magic to enable autosuspend:

# echo -n auto > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/uvcvideo/*:*/../power/level

Ideally this wants to be enabled automatically using a udev rule.

Anyway, my point is we should be happy to enable the camera by
default, because it will encourage the development of userspace
autosuspend whitelists :-).

Can the kernel do this by default for this specific driver on eeepc?

Auto-suspend white-listing would be done on the basis of USB ids
(vendor, product). At the moment it's expected that userspace should
take ownership of it. There's no infrastructure for in-kernel
whitelisting. I think.

Large lists in udev rules can work, there are already lists of USB
devices to set permissions for libusb access, e.g. for libmtp.

[CC usb list - in the hope someone will point out if I got this wrong :-)]

Btw I've now tested the udev rule, you can just dump this in a new
.rules file under /etc/udev/rules.d:

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="eb1a", ATTR{idProduct}=="2761", ATTR{power/level}="auto"

Not sure who I should submit it to though :-). debian-eeepc would take
it, but perhaps it should go in udev's default rules.

That's right. We found it was hopeless to try doing this in the kernel
so we dumped the whole mess into userspace.

AFAIK, Kay Sievers maintains the udev rules so lets cc him. And yeah, I
totally agree that it should go to the generic ones, not to
debian-eeepc.

:-)

I prefer that the kernel takes care of this things because, quite
frankly, I usually end up fighting with user-space more than I ever do
with the kernel. But don't mind me, I really have no say in USB
development. I am just happy to have a working camera and can hand
over the laptop back to my better half :-).

From our old measurements:

idle camera is ~20mA out of ~650mA total power... (measured on 901 model).

http://git.iksaif.net/?p=acpi4asus.git;a=summary
The tree is based on
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/lenb/linux-acpi-2.6

It's where I regroup eeepc/asus patchs before sending them to Len.

I don't think it should be added to linux-next, because the patchs
will first go into the acpi tree, wich is in linux-next.

Can I also ask if you tested with

CONFIG_NO_HZ=y

? IIRC, the kernel shipped on my old Eee didn't have NOHZ. Without
NOHZ, it won't save much _cpu_ power; cutting 10 wakeups/s off >100
won't make much difference.

I guess the main question is how often does Len pull from your tree?
If the delay is longer than few days, it might make sense to put your
tree directly into linux-next for early integration. And as long as
you don't rebase the "for-next" branch and keep it append-only, there
isn't going to be any conflicts either when Len pulls your tree and
publishes the result in linux-next.

Len does not pull my tree, I send series to him and cc linux-acpi.
But if it could help early integration, maybe linux-next is the right way to go.
I'm not very familiar with it, the only thing I have to do is create a
"for-next" branch (no rebase, only finalized patchs) and them ask
Andrew (or someone else ?) to add it to linux-next ?

And a similar line for 05e3:0505, which seems to be working fine here.

Ok.

Hmm, some cameras have input devices (i.e. buttons). In fact, uvcvideo
registers an input device on my EEE even though it has no buttons. I
think that needs investigating :-(.

It's quite likely that the buttons can stop working when suspended.
And there might be other devices with the same IDs, which have a
button wired up.

Alan

A change has recently been committed that results in the button only
working if the v4l device is open. Otherwise you've got several wakeups
a second due to the polling of the button endpoint. I'm assuming that
opening the device disables autosuspend, so I wouldn't worry about that.

It'd be interesting to try enabling autosuspend on all UVC devices. Can
a driver indicate that its hardware supports it?

There's no mechanism for this. It many environments it couldn't work,
because the decision about whether to enable autosuspend is made when
the device is first created (i.e., when the creation uevent is
received), whereas driver binding doesn't occur until later.

There's a lot of power management situations where you don't end up with
the optimal power configuration until a driver's bound. It's certainly
possible to do this in userspace, but if we know that the hardware
supported by a given driver will always work then it seems reasonable to
have it whitelist autosuspend on that device.

Sure. Such a thing could be added easily enough. It just doesn't
exist now, that's all.

Something roughly like this? We'd probably also want a function call so
drivers can do it based on the ID of the device they're handling, but in
some cases we can probably assume that all devices supported by the
driver will work.

My preference would be to use a function call always, rather than
relying on static driver information. It provides more flexibility.

Style violation: You should have blanks around the '=' sign. :-)

> usb_pm_unlock(udev);

That's right. If implemented as a function, turning off
udev->autosuspend_disabled is all the function would need to do
(provided we add the restriction that it should never be called from
anywhere except inside a driver's probe routine).
