Subject: bisect results of MSI-X related panic (help!)

I've been attempting to isolate a problem that we see on x86_64, when we
have many (6 or more) MSI-X enabled LAN ports with 33 MSI-X vectors
each.

The system panics, but with almost random panic traces, usually
somewhere around something to do with an interrupt. 2.6.29 is fine,
2.6.30-rc1 is not, and 2.6.31-rc8 fails as well.

The test I am using to reproduce is
rmmod ixgbe
modprobe ixgbe
ip l set ethX up (X = 1 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15)
run set_irq_affinity script (binds rx0/tx0 to cpu0, rx1/tx1 to cpu1, for
each ethX)
ping -f -c 5000 host

I've bisected, here is my bisect log, problem is that the commit
identified is a merge commit, and *I don't know what to revert to test*.
It appears the parent of the merge:
6e15cf04860074ad032e88c306bea656bbdd0f22 is marked good, but looks to be
in a possibly related area to the panic.

Can someone please help me figure out what to do next?

Thank you!

I don't know if I can help, but I'll try. At least I can tell you what I'd
do if I had no other input - perhaps it'll help you, perhaps not...

First thing I'd do would be to test with the final 2.6.31 and the latest
git kernel. Who knows, if you're lucky it may already be fixed.

Second thing I'd do would be to try and cut down my .config to the bare
minimum needed to boot and reproduce the bug on the box in question.
I'd do this for two reasons; 1) perhaps you'll discover that
disabeling/enabeling a certain kernel option makes the problem go away.
That would be useful info. 2) having a bare minimum .config makes it
faster to re-build kernels when doing a bisect.

Third thing I'd do would be to re-do the bisect using the 2.6.31 (or
latest git) kernel as the starting point. The new bisect will pick
different patches as the test points and may lead to a better result (at
least it sometimes has for me).

Fourth thing I'd do (assuming the above did not produce anything useful)
would be to take my minimal config and enable every single debug option
(no matter how irrelevant it seemed) I could on top of it, and hope that
one of them would catch something that would help me identify the problem.

If all of the above failed to produce any clue I'd ask for help on the
mailing lists :) Sorry, but that's all I can think of. Hope it helps.

That merge does contain quite a few merge fixups, so it's quite possible
one of them is the cause of the failure.
Maybe the simplest way to verify that is to compile both parents of the
merge to doublecheck that they work OK. Then, if a compile of the merge
itself is bad, the problem really is in the merge commit itself.

That commit is the "percpu" merge, so I've added Tejun (author of most of
that branch) and Ingo (merger) in CC.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, the oops doesn't ring a bell, well, not yet at least. It would
be great if the bisection can be narrowed down more.

Also, building w/ debug option on, capturing more oops traces and
pasting gdb output of l *<oops address> might shed some more light.

Thanks.

Okay, it has been a while and I have an update on this issue. The
actual panic seems to have disappeared in 2.6.32-rc1(2), however, with
CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR=y, I am still panicking, the stack protector
fault shows only this message, no backtrace is listed:

Kernel stack is corrupted in: ffffffff810b5b31

I've built with a full debug kernel before this crash, so I did:

(gdb) l *0xffffffff810b5b31
0xffffffff810b5b31 is in move_native_irq (kernel/irq/migration.c:67).
62 return;
63
64 desc->chip->mask(irq);
65 move_masked_irq(irq);
66 desc->chip->unmask(irq);
>>> 67 }
68
(gdb) l move_native_irq
54 void move_native_irq(int irq)
55 {
56 struct irq_desc *desc = irq_to_desc(irq);
57
58 if (likely(!(desc->status & IRQ_MOVE_PENDING)))
59 return;
60
61 if (unlikely(desc->status & IRQ_DISABLED))
62 return;
63
64 desc->chip->mask(irq);
65 move_masked_irq(irq);
66 desc->chip->unmask(irq);
67 }

So, this seems very related to my panic, as it is likely that
irqbalance or something else might try to move my interrupt from one
core to another and this seems likely related, and the original issue
as well as this one reproduce with LOTS of MSI-X vectors active.

- I tried connecting after the panic with kgdboc, no connection
- I tried kdump, but the same kernel I am using panics/hangs during
boot right after udev during the kexec() kernel boot (should I try
harder to get this working given it got so far?)
- I have ftrace function tracer running but no way to get at the log
post panic (wouldn't it be great if the kernel just dumped the ftrace
log on __stack_chk_fail?)

any other debugging tricks/ideas?

It seems CONFIG_CPUMASK_OFFSTACK (CONFIG_MAXSMP) can change something
around this - did you try?

Hmm... stackprotector adds considerable amount of stack usage and it
could be you're seeing stack overflow which would also explain the
random crashes you've been seeing. Do you have DEBUG_STACKOVERFLOW
turned on? This is on x86_64, right?

Hi, thanks for your response,

I'm working on it, but now that I've added a bunch of debug including the
above printk, my system panics (with a stack protector canary overwrite)
when loading the first network adapter with 30+ MSI-X vectors. I can boot
single user mode and bring up netconsole, but then as soon as I brought up
the first port with lots of MSI-X vectors, the system hard locks, no panic
message.

I have a bit of a theory that the node = -1 (numa_node) stuff might be
playing some havoc with the code in numa_migrate.c. I'm not sure if that
is contributing, but the code in there doesn't seem written to handle node
= - 1 very well. As in I never see it do an smp_processor_id at the
bottom before accessing the node value.

Not sure if that is relevant, but I wanted to mention it before I went
home.

What next? I made it worse so I guess that is something.
