Yes, here "single" word is used for different concepts and can have
several meanings. We usually make the difference between "single"
accesses and "burst" accesses.

Well, I don't know if it is related to efficiency. It is more another
pattern for the transfer which is described by a "template": struct
dma_interleaved_template.
This mode is extremely flexible and due to its use of a different
scatter-gather for source and destination can implement any memory
organization. Think about 2D objects on a screen or picture-in-picture
mode with consecutive addresses, holes, edges and frames boundaries.

Beware, it can be confusing when mixing "descriptors" and "hardware
descriptors". The ones used by the DMA controller itself to describe the

The first aim of this function is to poll for transaction completion, if

Moreover, I think it is not the number of "bytes" left, but the number

It's just a guess, but maybe you might not be able to schedule the
transfer right away? Think about a very dumb 1-channel (or a more
realistic more-DRQ-than-channel) device. You might have all the
channels busy doing some other transfers, and it's not really part of
the client driver job to address that kind of contention: it just
wants to queue some work for a later transfer.

Since it's blocking, I guess it's fine to wait for the current chunk

The burst can be in multiple clock cycles as well, so any reference to
clocks may not be right across various dma controllers.
Generically burst size is defined as a chunk of data transfer dma
controller would perform in single shot (may happen in 1 or multiple clock
cycles). The dma controller won't break this.
This has a very special meaning wrt slave usages as it involves FIFO (not
much of importance in memory copy ops where you want max burst for
performance). DMA transfer should not push data more than FIFO capacity,
ditto for pull as well.
Consider FIFO of 16 data items (beware not bytes), and burst being 8 and
watermark 8. So we will transfer 8 then 8 and so on.. ensures FIFO is
typically full or half.

Typically terminate_all would be called in error or timeout scenario. So
current transfer may not complete, so aborting right away would be the right
approach

There are few reasons
- Allow the dmaengine driver to collect and issue all pending txns in shot
(which is not happening today with drivers)
- Allow clients to prepare the txns ahead of time and send them when ready

Right, that's what I was trying to explain.

That's how I would have liked the DMA engine API to work, with the prep calls
being allowed to sleep, and client drivers preparing transactions in advance.
As all prep calls must be allowed from atomic context this pretty much defeats
the purpose.

Perhaps:
Addresses pointing to RAM are typically incremented (or decremented) after
each transfer. In case of a ring buffer, they may loop (DMA_CYCLIC).
Addresses pointing to a device's register (e.g. a FIFO) are typically fixed.

I mean, if we're in this function, we're already preparing a
transfer... And I would expect any programmer that followed CS101 to
be able to allocate the memory it needs :)

I meant that memory should be pre-allocated earlier (at probe time or channel
alloc time for instance) to avoid putting pressure on the nowait memory pool.
