I need some help. My system keeps locking up on me or suddenly rebooting.
Sometimes I'm able to telnet in and shutdown but usually I have to hit
the power button and pray that the disk isn't thrashed. I'm running
RedHat 7 and it happens with the supplied kernel or with a new kernel.
I'm currently running linux-2.4.0-test8 right now and it is compiled
using kgcc. (Found that tip in a message here) I searched through my logs
for help and find lots of these Oops messages. I then did some searching
on what Oops is. I was told to run ksymoops to get more info but this
extra info is way over my head. I'm posting this here in the hopes that
somebody can help me pin down what module or kernel setting is causing
all my problems. Thanks for any help.

It certainly has smbfs printed all over it. But I don't know how to decode
the call trace ... "sm+-220073" ?
Could you describe what it is you are doing when this happens?
Are you perhaps playing sound from a mounted smbfs? (esd)
Could you test if this is or isn't related to smbfs?
(ie don't mount any smbfs stuff and do the same things you normally do)
For reproducing oopses it is nice to use a separate system, either a
second installation on the same machine (with none of the normal
partitions mounted) or a second machine.
You could also try 2.4.0-test10-pre6 which is the latest (but if it is
smbfs related it should not make any difference).
The second oops I don't know anything about except that it may have been
triggered by the first oops.

You did everything right, alas the data was corrupted in the log files
before you even saw it. klogd tries to converts oops itself and far to
often it gets it wrong, yielding gibberish. Edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog
(assuming you use SysV init), change
daemon klogd
to
daemon klogd -x
then /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog restart. Any new oops will be left alone
so you will have clean data to feed to ksymoops. When you get a clean
oops, feed it to ksymoops and mail the result to linux-kernel.
