mtrr_bp_init() should be declared __init

Fixed in kbuild-git.git

I get the same warnings as Andrey (also the undefined symbols warnings,
but that's a different case).

As my config is 700 lines shorter, I've attached it too.

Following section mismatch warnings were reported by Andrey Borzenkov:

WARNING: arch/i386/kernel/built-in.o - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:amd_init_mtrr from .text between 'mtrr_bp_init' (at offset 0x967a) and 'mtrr_attrib_to_str'

WARNING: arch/i386/kernel/built-in.o - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text: from .text between 'get_mtrr_state' (at offset 0xa770) and 'generic_get_mtrr'

It was tracked down to a few functions missing __init tag.
Compile tested only.

I assumed that enabling CONFIG_MTRR would be enough to trigger it but
that did not do it (CONFIG_MTRR is enabled in defconfig).

When I used the config posted by Andrey in: http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/5/19/61
I saw the warnings.

I did not look into what caused the warnings with Andrey's but
not with defconfig.

I'm pretty sure I made those functions __init when I cleaned up that
code. Did those pieces of the patch get mislayed? I thought it made it
into upstream.

There was another patch that removed the __init marker to _fix_ section mismatch errors.
I have lost the actual mail but I asked the submitter to send me a copy of
the configuration so I could take a closer look.
Obviously it was the wrong fix to remove the _init marker.

Hm, I think there were two overlapping patches to address the problem.
One removed the __init markers, and was a bit of a hack. Mine
restructured all the functions so that it was all done properly (ie,
init called init; cpuinit called cpuinit). Looks like both got applied.

Did the patches reach 2.6.22-rc3 yet?

If they did, then the following warnings might need fixing:

No.

There is already one patch queued for it. But actually in my experience I cannot
remember a single real bug showed by these warnings. All were false positives
and there are always more of them.

Maybe it would be best to disable these warnings again; not much good
seems to come from them.

We recently had one bug releated to cpu* functions that was caused by wrong
section handling.
The whole purpose with __init and friends are the possibility to drop
the .init.text (+ .init.data) section when the kernel is up and running.

So if we have:

void __init deep_init()
{
not_so_deep_init();
}

void not_so_deep_init()
{
not_deep_init();
}

void __init not_deep_init()
{
...;
}

Then without the warnings we would never drop not_so_deep_init().
So the warnigns serve two purposes:

1) highlight places where something ought to be marked __init but is not done so.
2) highlight places where we have a potential dangerous reference from .text to .init.text

While proposng to drop the warnings people refer to case: 2) and totally forbet about case 1).
For the actual case with mtrr we had a situation where we merged two patches.
So one was the right fix but the next was the wrong fix. So we ended up with some inconsistent
code which we were lucky that the build pointed out so we could get it fixed.

My objective is to kill all false positives 2.6.23 and that is doable.
There are some tricky thing to address in non x86 architectures - like a pending issue in sparc64
for instance.

So section mismatch warnings are more about catching sloopy usage of __init than it is to
catch potential kernel oopesen. But the latter is a nice side effect that is appreciated.

My point was that I cannot recall a single real oops bug found by the compile
time checking.

We had a few in the past, but since we poison init data after boot they all tended
to be found quickly anyways.

But the warnings just seem to require endless changes and bogus changes
(randomly moving code which was actually ok because it only called
in the init case).

I know what they do, you don't need to repeatedly reexplain them.

My point was just that in all the __init/__initdata warnings I recently fixed
personally there wasn't a single one that wasn't a false positive and frankly I don't
see any sign of them really showing real bugs. Basically effort:gain doesn't
seem to be well balanced here.

There are quite a few of these fixes where you look at it and wonder "ytf
did the kernel ever work"? I suspect that it's partly a case of the code
reading random junk from where a flag used to be and continuing to work.
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC would have caught it.

Also, simply lack of testing coverage: few people have the correct
hardware, the correct config options and then go and do an rmmod+insmod.
Even fewer do a CPU hotplug. Fewer still do a memory hotplug.

But there are a lot of fixes, and a lot of warnings, and they are real bugs.

> We had a few in the past, but since we poison init data after boot they all tended

Sometimes. But a common pattern is "discover something at boot time and
save it away for later boot-time code". The storage gets marked __fooinit
and then it turns out that some non-boot-time initialisation code is using
it.

> But the warnings just seem to require endless changes and bogus changes
> (randomly moving code which was actually ok because it only called

That would be a false positive. We do need the various tools to suppress
those so that we can find new bugs as they turn up.

You're right that it's all a complete pain. But the fault doesn't lie with
the checking code, IMO. It's just that the whole initdata thing is hard to
get right. All this fuss for a couple hundred kbytes - any sane
organisation would have killed the whole thing years ago ;)

It'll really get to be fun when some smarty writes us a "non __init symbol
referred to only from __init code" checker.

It's far better to find the bugs during build time than during run-time.

The main culprint is probarly that the warnings are so vocal.
Everyone see them for each kernel-build that touches one file.
And then everyone and their cousin try to fix them.

When we are down to a warning-free x86 build things will start to look different.
And I will do my to make us get there - as time permits.
