but trying to move up from 2.5.71-bk1 to 2.5.71-bk2 generated the
following in trying to build using the same .config file:

arrrgh ... never mind ... the utility i have for building a new kernel
failed to apply the patch properly, so this was generated by the stock
2.5.71 kernel. applying the patch fixed it. dang. it's too early
for this.
