Subject: System silently not booting with 2.6.35 nor with 2.6.35.3 -- It works fine with 2.6.32.x and 2.6.18.x

Hi all,

I am experiencing problems with a system of ours. Namely, it boots
fine with kernels
2.6.18.x and 2.6.32.x, but does not boot with 2.6.35 nor with 2.6.35.3.

With "not boot", I mean that it literally prints nothing after grub
hands over control
even with the "debug" statement enabled. Early printk is useless, as well.

Grub tells me:

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz debug console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200 ide_core.nodma=0.0
ide_core.nodma=0.1 ide_core.nodma=1.0 root=/dev/ram0 rw init=/linuxrc ? root_d
ev=/dev/hda1 etc_dev=/dev/hda2 root_maxsize=200m varlog_maxsize=10m root_fstype
=ext3 etc_fstype=ext3 do_md5sum=0
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x2e00, size=0x28f400]
initrd /boot/initrd
[Linux-initrd @ 0x377f0000, 0x800000 bytes]

The initrd is static and merely contains a /linuxrc which untars the
root tarball into
RAM. Starting with a "clean" parameter line yields the same result.

I am attaching the .config for .32 and .35.

Any and all help in tracking this down appreciated. If you need more
information, ask.

Thanks a lot,
Richard

As a follow-up, we restarted with a minimal confugiration from scratch and
it boots. Please disregard the lacking root filesystem, that is of no concern
to us atm. Note that there is one special char in the paste below. No idea
where that is coming from.

I will try to hunt down the option(s) that caused this, but if anyone has any
suggestions...

Thanks,
Richard
