Following kernel oops found while booting arm 32 bit x15 device with
kselftest configs enabled on stable-rc linux-5.15. This is specific
to kselftest merge config build booting on arm TI BeagleBoard X15
device.
This is an intermittent issue and not specific to current stable rc
release.

I've done an analysis here, and mostly understand the problem, but
don't have a good solution yet.

I looked up do_page_fault+0x94/0x464, this is "current->mm":

So r3 is the current stack bottom, which holds "current", and it's
also the stack pointer, so the entire 8KB stack has been
exhausted at this point, and the thread_info been overwritten
as a result.

Unfortunately you have skipped the interesting bit, but I found
it in the log download:

while processing timer interrupts (without IRQ stacks, because
5.15 didn't have them on arch/arm) in a deeply (6 levels)

Most of these functions are probably fine by themselves, there
are just so many of them that it overruns the stack in the end.
One thing that sticks out is the print_constraints_debug() function
in the regulator framework, which uses a larger-than-average stack
to hold a string buffer, and then calls into the low-level
driver to get the actual data (regulator_get_voltage_rdev,
_regulator_is_enabled). Splitting the device access out into a
different function from the string handling might reduce the
stack usage enough to stay just under the 8KB limit, though it's
probably not a complete fix. I added the regulator maintainers
to Cc for thoughts on this.
Enabling both IRQ stacks and VMAP_STACK on mainline kernels
would at least make this easier to identify, but neither of
those are available on 5.15.
Is there a way to tell the driver core to intentionally defer
device probing when a new device gets added inside of a probe()
function? I don't think we can change the default behavior
this fundamentally without causing regressions, but if there
is a compile-time or boot-time flag to change it, that may
be enough to avoid the specific problem on the X15 test setup.

I checked the stack usage for each of the 147 functions in the
backtrace, and as I was guessing print_constraints_debug() is
the largest, but it's still only 168 bytes, and everything else
is smaller, so no point hacking this.
168 print_constraints_debug
96 timekeeping_advance
64 set_machine_constraints
64 of_i2c_register_device
56 of_platform_bus_create
48 schedule_timeout
One more idea I had is the unwinder: since this kernel is built
with the frame-pointer unwinder, I think the stack usage per
function is going to be slightly larger than with the arm unwinder.
Naresh, how hard is it to reproduce this bug intentionally?
Can you try if it still happens if you change the .config to
use these:?
# CONFIG_FUNCTION_GRAPH_TRACER is not set
# CONFIG_UNWINDER_FRAME_POINTER is not set
CONFIG_UNWINDER_ARM=y

You mentioned that we are doing probing of a device 6 levels deep.
Could one of the parent devices be marked for an asynchronous probe
thus breaking the chain?
Thanks.

I have done this experiment and reported crash not reproduced
after eight rounds of testing [1].

Ok, good to hear. In this case, I see three possible ways forward
to prevent this from coming back on your system:
a) use asynchronous probing for one or more of the drivers as
Dmitry suggested. This means fixing it upstream first and then
backporting the fix to all stable kernels. We should probably
do this anyway, but this will need more testing on your side.
b) Change your kernel config permanently with the options above,
if LKFT does not actually rely on CONFIG_FUNCTION_GRAPH_TRACER.
I don't know if it does.
c) backport commit 41918ec82eb6 ("ARM: ftrace: enable the graph
tracer with the EABI unwinder") from 5.17. This was part of
a longer series from Ard, and while the patch itself looks
simple enough to be backported, I suspect we'd have to
backport the entire series, which is probably not going to
be realistic. Ard, any comments on this?

It at least needs the preceding patch, which tracks the location of LR
on the stack when using CONFIG_UNWINDER_ARM.
But I'd take the whole series for good measure.

Ah right, I forgot that we already have a per-driver flag for this,
thanks a lot for the suggestion!
This means it might be as easy as this oneliner, picking
one of the drivers in the middle of the call chain that is
not shared across too many other systems:
diff --git a/drivers/mfd/palmas.c b/drivers/mfd/palmas.c
index 8b7429bd2e3e..f4a96eb98eea 100644
--- a/drivers/mfd/palmas.c
+++ b/drivers/mfd/palmas.c
@@ -731,6 +731,7 @@ static struct i2c_driver palmas_i2c_driver = {
.driver = {
.name = "palmas",
.of_match_table = of_palmas_match_tbl,
+ .probe_type = PROBE_PREFER_ASYNCHRONOUS,
},
.probe = palmas_i2c_probe,
.remove = palmas_i2c_remove,
There is still a small regression risk for other OMAP platforms
that may rely on probe ordering, but it should reliably fix
the issue.
There is a related idea that I'll try to take another look
at: since the bug only happens sometimes, and not at all on
mainline kernels with IRQ_STACK, I had the idea of making the
kernel stack size runtime configurable on mainline kernels, by
reserving a fixed amount of the 8KB total. This should make it
possible to narrow down the actual maximum stack usage before
a guaranteed crash, and then validate that a fix correctly
addresses it.
