Subject: [PATCH] random: use computational hash for entropy extraction

The current 4096-bit LFSR used for entropy collection had a few
desirable attributes for the context in which it was created. For
example, the state was huge, which meant that /dev/random would be able
to output quite a bit of accumulated entropy before blocking. It was
also, in its time, quite fast at accumulating entropy byte-by-byte,
which matters given the varying contexts in which mix_pool_bytes() is
called. And its diffusion was relatively high, which meant that changes
would ripple across several words of state rather quickly.

However, it also suffers from a few security vulnerabilities. In
particular, inputs learned by an attacker can be undone, but more over,
if the state of the pool leaks, its contents can be controlled and
entirely zeroed out. I've demonstrated this attack with this SMT2
script, <https://xn--4db.cc/5o9xO8pb>, which Boolector/CaDiCal solves in
a matter of seconds on a single core of my laptop, resulting in little
proof of concept C demonstrators such as <https://xn--4db.cc/jCkvvIaH/c>.

For basically all recent formal models of RNGs, these attacks represent
a significant cryptographic flaw. But how does this manifest
practically? If an attacker has access to the system to such a degree
that he can learn the internal state of the RNG, arguably there are
other lower hanging vulnerabilities -- side-channel, infoleak, or
otherwise -- that might have higher priority. On the other hand, seed
files are frequently used on systems that have a hard time generating
much entropy on their own, and these seed files, being files, often leak
or are duplicated and distributed accidentally, or are even seeded over
the Internet intentionally, where their contents might be recorded or
tampered with. Seen this way, an otherwise quasi-implausible
vulnerability is a bit more practical than initially thought.

Another aspect of the current mix_pool_bytes() function is that, while
its performance was arguably competitive for the time in which it was
created, it's no longer considered so. This patch improves performance
significantly: on a high-end CPU, an i7-11850H, it improves performance
of mix_pool_bytes() by 225%, and on a low-end CPU, a Cortex-A7, it
improves performance by 103%.

This commit replaces the LFSR of mix_pool_bytes() with a straight-
forward cryptographic hash function, BLAKE2s, which is already in use
for pool extraction. Universal hashing with a secret seed was considered
too, something along the lines of <https://eprint.iacr.org/2013/338>,
but the requirement for a secret seed makes for a chicken & egg problem.
Instead we go with a formally proven scheme using a computational hash
function, described in section B.1.8 of <https://eprint.iacr.org/2019/198>.

BLAKE2s outputs 256 bits, which should give us an appropriate amount of
min-entropy accumulation, and a wide enough margin of collision
resistance against active attacks. mix_pool_bytes() becomes a simple
call to blake2s_update(), for accumulation, while the extraction step
becomes a blake2s_final() to generate a seed, with which we can then do
a HKDF-like or BLAKE2X-like expansion, the first part of which we fold
back as an init key for subsequent blake2s_update()s, and the rest we
produce to the caller. This then is provided to our CRNG like usual. In
that expansion step, we make opportunistic use of 32 bytes of RDRAND
output, just as before. We also always reseed the crng with 32 bytes,
unconditionally, or not at all, rather than sometimes with 16 as before,
as we don't win anything by limiting beyond the 16 byte threshold.

Going for a hash function as an entropy collector is a conservative,
proven approach. The result of all this is a much simpler and much less
bespoke construction than what's there now, which not only plugs a
vulnerability but also improves performance considerably.

Hi Stephan,

It's like this for a few reasons:

- Primarily, we want to feed 32 bytes back in after finalization (in
this case as a PRF key), just as the code does before this patch, and
return 32 bytes to the caller, and we don't want those to be relatable
to each other after the seed is erased from the stack.
- Actually, your statement isn't correct: _extract_entropy is called
for 48 bytes at ~boot time, with the extra 16 bytes affecting the
block and nonce positions of the chacha state. I'm not sure this is
very sensible to do -- it really is not adding anything -- but I'd
like to avoid changing multiple things at once, when these are better
discussed and done separately. (I have a separate patch for something
along those lines.)
- Similarly, I'd like to avoid changing the general idea of what
_extract_entropy does (the underscore version has never accounted for
entropy counts), deferring anything like that, should it become
necessary, to an additional patch, where again it can be discussed
separately.
- By deferring the RDRAND addition to the second phase, we avoid a
potential compression call while the input pool lock is held, reducing
our critical section.
- HKDF-like constructions are well studied and understood in the model
we're working in, so it forms a natural and somewhat boring fit for
doing what we want to do.

I agree, it looks sane. & worthwhile.

Should we be concerned about relying too much on one piece of crypto,
though? Blake was derived from Chacha, which we already use in the
crng & we already use Blake in extract_buf().

Also, the Blake people now have Blake3 which they say is faster.

Ignoring your probably wrong mention about "no study", we're not
making any use of "internal states". We're using the hash function off
the shelf without modifications. There's no whacky bespoke crypto
going on, no use of "internal states", nothing that matches your
description.

Except it's not. The non-underscore version calls into account(), and
returns false when it's not sufficiently full. I'm also not sure it
matters in the way you think it does; perhaps you could clarify what

That iterative hashing serves as a good entropy accumulator is
rigorously shown in the paper that the commit message references.

And either way, we never reseed the crng with more than 32 bytes, so
what's happening here is rather boring.

When academics say "based on Merkle-Damgard", they just mean iterative
hashing. In this case, we have:

refresh_F(s, x) = F(s, x), where s is the hash state, and x is a new input.

Every time new inputs are refreshed into it, they're compressed
together with the prior. In other words, "what a hash function does"
that broadly uses the Merkle-Damgard model, which BLAKE2s does. Modern
real hash functions also have a bit of extra book keeping - things
like finalization to prevent length extension and such - but these are
still considered MD-based hash functions. We're not going to excavate
the raw BLAKE2s compression function. In particular, I like that we
don't need to do anything funky and can just use something off the
shelf

Actually, though, I should have cited sections 5.1 and 6.4 (fixed now
for v2), which show a model of a next function for a full PRNG rather
than just a finalize for an extractor, which might pique your
interest, as it shows the instantiation of the new state (with F(s,
0)).

With regards to PRF vs a key-less hash function: for BLAKE2s, the
former reduces to the latter, in the sense that keyed BLAKE2s is the
same as ordinary BLAKE2s, except the first thing hashed in is the key
followed by 32 zero bytes (and the IV has a single bit change for
domain separation). We would be totally fine omitting those zeros --
from an entropy perspective they're obviously not adding anything --
but the fact that BLAKE2s is specified like this I think will make the

really matter at all. About the most you could say is that we could
probably be *less* careful and do slightly *less* hashing and still
have a very good construction, but that I'd like to do a bit more.

Thanks, I just got rid of that quite outdated section and other things
that reference the old LFSR approach for v2.

There are so many other issues with the documentation comments in
random.c too, that I think I'll also work on a general documentation
cleanup patch at some point down the road. It still documents the old
/dev/random behavior, suggests that RDRAND is faster than ChaCha20,
forgets about getrandom(), and so on and so forth.

Jason,
if the current code is mistakenly stretching the entropy, perhaps the
correct curse of action is to correct that mistake first, before
introducing a new conditioning function.
As it is, these patches cannot be say to just perform conditioning if
they are stretching the entropy, the risk is compounding errors and
voiding any reasonable analysis of the entropy carried through the RNG.

It would also be nice to have an explanation (in the patch or at least
the commit message) about how entropy is preserved and why a specific
function is cryptographically adequate. Note that there is no study
about using internal states of hash functions, it would be better to
base these decisions on solid ground by citing relevant research or
standards.
