This one breaks my serial ports. Related config:
bogomips kraxel /work/bk/2.4/build# grep CONFIG_SERIAL .config
CONFIG_SERIAL=y
CONFIG_SERIAL_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_SERIAL_EXTENDED is not set
# CONFIG_SERIAL_NONSTANDARD is not set
bogomips kraxel /work/bk/2.4/build#
If I try to boot the box with serial console enabled
(console=ttyS0,115200n8 console=tty0) it hangs at boot time. Without
the "console=ttyS0 ..." it boots just fine. But I get no login prompt
at the serial line. Syslog shows this:

-pre6 works just fine.

I can confirm this, mere TCGETS for ioctl(2) fails with errno 5 (EIO).
Has been fine right up to 2.4.19-pre7 since the invention of the wheel. :)

Hi, I found that my ttyS0 had turned into ttyS1 :-) My modem was
unresponsive, until I changed the setting to use ttyS1, hope this helps.
(It is on the right port, I am certain. I was using ttyS0 with pre6
right before rebooting to pre7)

only defined for SMP or when CONFIG_X86_UP_IOAPIC is set.
init/main.c:332 and arch/i386/kernel/dmi_scan.c:357 do both use it and
don't depend on CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC themselves.

Making getty using ttyS1 works for me too, I have my login prompt back.
Looks like a off-by-one bug ...

This is wrong.

And I thought devfs was the one responsible for changing ttyS0 to
ttyS1. But I this is happening on 2.4.19-pre6. If I remember correctly
this started happening when I decided to use devfs. I will disable devfs
and see if it happens again. Is anyone else with the sane problem also
using devfs?

This patch should fix it:

Yes. A short conversation with bcrl even uncovered why it is wrong
and why my reason for doing it is wrong..
Marcelo, you you please cset -x this one?
Christoph
I broke this with a typo in my patch (I inserted a line one line above
where I wanted to). Follwing patch will fix the problem.

It is the SPACEs vs TABs problems. Your mailer or my mailer converted
TABs to SPACEs. Replaces SPACEs with TABs or try the following patch
again.

Done.
