Hello Urban and other kernel developers,
I'm having a semi-reproducible Oops which seems to be related to smbfs on
an SMP system. I'm using smbfs and rsync to back up data from about 60
Windows machines to our Linux file server. These oopses are fairly
reproducible: I've been using smbfs on this system for about two weeks and
have seen the oops twice (had to power cycle the machine both times).
When I first encountered the bug, my scripts were written to back up as
many machines as possible in parallel, so I thought the problem might be
aggravated by multiple smbfs filesystems running in parallel, or possibly
two such filesystems being unmounted at the same time. Just before the
Oops, I saw this in syslog:

The second time I saw the Oops I had rewritten my scripts to only backup
one Windows machine at a time; there should only be one smbfs filesystem
mounted at a time. This time I did not see the VFS-related entries in
syslog, but there was a reference to BUG which I did not see the first
time. However the rest of the Oops looks more or less the same.
I've run scripts which are almost identical to these on another system
and haven't had these problems -- but that system only has one CPU.
The hardware:
Intel server board using Serverworks III low-end chipset, dual Pentium
III/1.26GHz, 1GB RAM, 3com 3C996B-T (tigon3-based) gigabit Ethernet,
hardware RAID 5 on four Maxtor 160GB drives. (I can forward the output
from dmesg if you need it.)
The software:
RedHat 7.3, fairly minimal install, latest patches, and their
2.4.18-10smp kernel.
At home I like to replace the kernel with one custom compiled from the
mainstream source code. However at work I'm using the stock RedHat kernel
so that the system will be (hopefully) more maintainable by other admins.
Nonetheless I'm going to give a generic 2.4.19 kernel a try and see if
that clears up the problem.
I've filed a bug report with RedHat on this (tracking #73526).
Has anyone seen this crash before? Is it specific to the RedHat kernel,
or is it possibly in the mainstream kernels as well?
Let me know what I can do on my end to track this down and I'll gladly do
it. Is there any additional information you need?

it with a higher debug level (4, check your smbmount.log), add more debug

The mount should become unusble at this point because smbfs no longer has
a connection and it can't contact it's smbmount daemon to get a new one.

I believe this is at umount time. And if smb_delete_inode wants to
actually close something and smb_retry is failing it won't be able to.
I need to find out if/why that would cause the busy message. When the
connection closes any open files are closed, so closing shouldn't be a
problem.
Did you get either of these the second time?

I upped the debug level from 1 to 5, which appears to give a ton of
information. I didn't see any interesting messages from debug=1; the
relevant areas from smbmount.log are below. I enabled core dumps just
now -- RedHat 7.3 has them disabled for bash by default. So with luck
I should have more information if this happens again.
I upgraded to kernel 2.4.19 just in case that was the problem, and I'll
upgrade Samba in the next few days.

That's what I thought too. Interestingly, however, I think the log file
of my backup script from the second crash indicated that that crash
happened when the filesystem was first mounted. I accidently deleted
that log though so I can't check it.... :-(

No. I've included more of /var/log/messages (and also
/var/log/samba/smbmount.log) below, in case there's something useful
in them that I overlooked.

Just wanted to let people know, in case they ran into this same bug -- I
haven't had any more crashes since upgrading to a standard 2.4.19 kernel.
