Subject: 2.4.20-rc1-ac4 p4-clockmod.c cpu_has_ht undeclared

Seems -ac4 is missing some part of a patch? "cpu_has_ht" doesn't show up
anywhere else in the entire source tree.

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.4.20-rc1-ac4+fs199+acpi20021101/include
-Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing

-march=i686 -nostdinc -iwithprefix include -DKBUILD_BASENAME=p4_clockmod
-c -o p4-clockmod.o p4-clockmod.c
p4-clockmod.c: In function pufreq_p4_setdc':
p4-clockmod.c:72: pu_has_ht' undeclared (first use in this function)
p4-clockmod.c:72: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
p4-clockmod.c:72: for each function it appears in.)

Ian this should fix your compilation problem.
Alan, Dave this applies clean to 2.4.19 vanilla too.

Close. Really close. It compiles, but now has an unresolvable symbol?

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.20-rc1-ac4/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/p4-clockmod.o
depmod: smp_num_siblings

This is baffling me, because 'smp_num_siblings' is indeed listed in
System.map as:

c0292e28 D smp_num_siblings

Any clues?

Ian Morgan

Thats amusing seeing as it pulls in asm/smp.h via linux/smp.h It compiled
and linked over here, mind sending your config?

Interesting.. that does it. Now we have:

c0286b53 R __kstrtab_smp_num_siblings
c028e030 R __ksymtab_smp_num_siblings
c0292e28 D smp_num_siblings

and the p4-clockmod module loads OK. Thx.

Now my next step is figuring out how to actually set policy with this thing,
but I'm sure I can manage that one.

OK.. this is strange, maybe.

# cat /proc/cpufreq
minimum CPU frequency - maximum CPU frequency - policy
CPU 0 300685 kHz ( 12 %) - 2405487 kHz (100 %) - performance

# cat /proc/sys/cpu/0/*
2405487
2405487
300685

# echo 300685 >proc/sys/cpu/0/speed
[box stalls for about 25-30 seconds]

# cat /proc/sys/cpu/0/*
300685
2405487
300685

# echo 2405487 >proc/sys/cpu/0/speed
[box stalls for about 25-30 seconds]

# cat /proc/sys/cpu/0/*
2706165
2405487
300685

# cat /proc/cpufreq
minimum CPU frequency - maximum CPU frequency - policy
CPU 0 2405487 kHz ( 100 %) - 2706165 kHz (112 %) - powersave

?!?! Should the P4 really be able to go to 112%, and why would it do that
after I told it to go back to 100% ?

Any idea why the box would stall (at least no kb/mouse input is accepted,
not sure about other interrupts) for such a long time when changing the
speed?

On the other hand, some short (<1 min) cpu-bound processes for benchmarking
each took the same amount of time to run when the clock was at 12%, 100%,
and 112%, so I'm not sure the clock was really being changed at all.

Ian Morgan

Can you try this patch?

I can look into that.

Yes, that looks sane.. essentially back to a *8 instead of *9.

Previously the policy->max could keep growing out of control, but now will
be nicely capped at stock_freq (if I'm reading that right).

Ok, applying patch now:
Oh wow.. I now have a 19.25 GHz P4!! Woohoo! :-)

minimum CPU frequency - maximum CPU frequency - policy
CPU 0 2406217 kHz ( 12 %) - 19249737 kHz (100 %) - performance

OK thta makes no sense. This minor patch could not possibly account for this
wild change in numbers. Looks like the stock_freq is now totally out of
whack right after p4-clockmod is loaded.

Now just rmmod and modprobe again, and lo and behold:

minimum CPU frequency - maximum CPU frequency - policy
CPU 0 19249837 kHz ( 12 %) - 153998696 kHz ( 16 %) - performance

962 GHz P4!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Ok, well it's obvious now that some data structure is not being properly
cleared/initialized when loading the module, because rmmod/modprobe cycles
keep growing the stock_freq out of control.

# # trying to force min/max back into sane bounds:
# echo "1000000:2000000:performance" > cpufreq
Segmentation fault

And of course now rmmod p4-clockmod is device locked. Time for a reboot,
methinks.
