Subject: [PROBLEM] NFS trouble - file corruptions

[1.] One line summary of the problem:

Files created with bzip2/gzip directly to NFS file system gets corrupted

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:

.tar.bz2 archives created directly on an NFS file system gets random
corruptions. Random bytes in the resulting file gets corrupted;
corrupted bytes are usually grouped. Corruptions happen different places
each run.

File creation could happen with "bzip2 -9c t.tar >
/path/to/nfs/t.tar.bz2" (and similar with gzip) but does not happen when
uncompressing files the same way with "bzip2 -dc t.tar.bz2 >
/path/to/nfs/t.tar".

Doing exactly the same on local filesystems (ext3) on local disks
produces no such errors.

No messages show up in log files and no corruptions happen with other
network traffic.

[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):

NFS, networking

[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):

2.4.19 - also tried with 2.4.18/2.4.19 combination as well as both
2.4.18.

[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information
resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)

No error messages at all.

[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
problem (if possible)

[7.6.] SCSI information (from /proc/scsi/scsi)

No SCSI

[7.7.] Other information that might be relevant to the problem
(please look in /proc and include all information that you
think to be relevant):

Server:

# cat /etc/exports
/home/backup/carlsberg 172.16.0.3(rw,root_squash,anonuid=1003,anongid=100)

Client:

# cat /etc/fstab | grep nfs
tuborg:/home/backup/carlsberg /backup/net nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nfsvers=3 0 0

Both kernels were configured with the following NFS-related parameters:

CONFIG_NFS_FS=m
CONFIG_NFS_V3=y
# CONFIG_ROOT_NFS is not set
CONFIG_NFSD=m
CONFIG_NFSD_V3=y
CONFIG_SUNRPC=m
CONFIG_LOCKD=m
CONFIG_LOCKD_V4=y

All filesystems on block devices are ext3 mounted with "default"
parameters.

Help me help - I am totally lost; I have no idea where to look anymore;
I don't know what more information to include, so tell me what I missed.

I am no kernel hacker, but I am willing to try out patches etc. if
necessary...

Can you reproduce with 2.4.20-pre4?

(Note: the pre-patches can be found on your local ftp.dk.kernel.org in
the /pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/testing directory)

I assume, you mean rc4 and not pre4?

Both client and server now running 2.4.20-rc4, but unfortunately this
does not solve the problem:

# md5sum n?.tar.bz2
6d8f530d420fb56fa590cdf1d8da9c59 n1.tar.bz2
3fa4100e6a204d1e5ad8d43d9aa9a8de n2.tar.bz2

(both files created after reboot of both machines).

I just tried NFS over TCP and the problem occurs here too.

If I have understood TCP correctly, this should make sure, that this is
not a physical cabling error or data corruption in the NIC's...

Is that a 'clean' rc4, with no extra patches, no memory-corrupting
Nvidia modules loaded or anything suspicious like that?
'cos I'm completely incapable of reproducing anything like what you
are seeing.

Does it also occur if you play around with setting rsize and wsize =
1024?

Trond

Entirely clean. Source 2.4.19, 2.4.20-rc4.bz2 patch applied (both
verified with gpg). No other patches, nor external modules.

Compiled on Debian Woody, configured as below.

Given that you are saying that even synchronous RPC (which is the
default for r/wsize = 1024) is failing, then my 2 main suspicions are

- hardware failure: Have you tried this on several different
server/client combinations and hardware combinations?

- gcc miscompile: which version of gcc are you using?

Trond

I have thought of this too but never seen traces of hardware failure
otherwise. I will try other hardware tomorrow (I'm tight on time today)
- although I haven't got access to that many different machines.

It is the standard Debian Woody gcc:

Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-linux/2.95.4/specs

Sigh:

Just tried reversing the process (ie. exchanging the client/server
role): No trouble at all, no errors in files.

I just tried turning off DMA on the server disk (this is just a low-end
IDE-system): No errors in files (compressing the file thrice).

So it does not at all seem to be a NFS-issue!

I have no idea what is wrong. If the disk, cable or IDE controller does
bit-flipping when DMA is turned on, why is the problem only seen with
NFS? I have never seem corrupted files or metadata with DMA turned
(except once long ago, when I experimented with high-transfer-modes - I
haven't done that since)...

Thanks for your help!

(damn, PIO-mode performance sucks!)

More likely it changes the timings. There is at least one other
possibility though. With some via bridges using slightly too slow DDR
RAM at a 133MHz clock works reliably _until_ you get a mix of CPU and
DMA traffic. It'll even pass memtest86.

So if its a VIA box, turn DMA back on, stick the bios into its load
failsafe defaults mode and see if that has an affect.

This is not DDR, it is SD-RAM (K6-2/300, 256MB SD-RAM in one stick).

But there is not much CPU traffic when making the files. The NFS-client
is doing the compression, but the corruption seems to happen on the
NFS-server (at least I can avoid it by turning off DMA on teh NFS
server), which has not got any special CPU usage at that time.

I will try to look into BIOS settings (it does not have a 'load failsafe
option' IIRC, but I'm pretty sure I can change RAM timings) - but I
won't be near the machine before tomorrow.

I couldn't solve the problem by setting timing parameters...

However, the RTL8139-driver is now configured for PIO-mode instead of
MMIO-mode (CONFIG_8139TOO_PIO), and I don't see corruptions anymore.

Thank you all for your help!
