Because I proposed it. I believe everything scripts/checkpatch.pl
tells me.

It looks like the preference on "GPL" is pretty resent. Check commit
bf7fbeeae6db ("module: Cure the MODULE_LICENSE "GPL" vs. "GPL v2"
bogosity").
