It works for me.
Please do this:
# cd
# mke2fs /dev/ram0 -m 0 -N 4096
# gzip < /dev/ram0 > before.gz
# mount /dev/ram0 /mnt/ram0
# umount /dev/ram0
# gzip < /dev/ram0 > after.gz
and then send me your .config, before.gz and after.gz

You left out a *crucial* step. "cd" into the mounted ramdisk
directory. This step is what does the damage.
