Subject: [PATCH v4 1/4] ASoc: PCM6240: Create PCM6240 Family driver code

PCM6240 driver implements a flexible and configurable setting for register
and filter coefficients, to one, two or even multiple PCM6240 Family Audio
chips.

Signed-off-by: Shenghao Ding <[email protected]>

Change in v4:
- All these chips have only a portion of the codec's functionality, such
as ADC or DAC, and so on, but their audio performance is far superior
to the codec's, and cost is lower than codec, and much easier to
program than codec.
- Use _MAPLE as cache_type for new devices, it's a more modern design with
tradeoffs that work better for most current systems.
- Rewrite error checks to return immediately on error in pcmdev_dev_read,
pcmdev_dev_write, pcmdev_dev_update_bits, and pcmdev_dev_bulk_write,
that way there's less indentation and fewer paths later on.
- Add profileid check in pcmdevice_set_profile_id, if invalid, set to
max-value or 0.
- fixed the return value as -EBUSY in pcmdevice_startup
- remove unused chn and chenend in pcmdevice_select_cfg_blk
- Be consistent with name, ret, rc, err.
- fixed compiling warning on iteration 4 invokes undefined behavior in
pcmdev_regbin_ready.
- remove unnecessary blank line between
"module_i2c_driver(pcmdevice_i2c_driver);" and
"static struct i2c_driver pcmdevice_i2c_driver".
- Move reset into i2c_probe and remove sw_rst callback.
- extract the put_vol and get_vol function as pcmdev_put_volsw and
pcmdev_get_volsw to reduce the red
- Simplify and rewirte gain_control_add code.
- Move gain kcontrol into codec_probe.
- Unified ret and rc to ret.
- correct of_gpio.h to gpio.h
- Add an array pcmdev_ctrl_name to store the gain control name.
- Move i2c_set_clientdata before sw_reset.
- Remove pcmdevice_startup, it seemed unnecessary once firmware_request was
move to i2c_probe.
- Add return value into pcmdev_profile_ctrl_add.
- If one side of the if/else has a braces both should.
- Remove dix4192
- mixer-test kselftest to check the Kcontrol

Subject: [PATCH v4 4/4] ASoc: dt-bindings: PCM6240: Add initial DT binding

PCM6240 family chips are popular among audio customers, in spite of only a
portion of the functionality of codec, such as ADC or DAC, and so on, for
different Specifications, range from Personal Electric to Automotive
Electric, even some professional fields.yet their audio performance is far
superior to the codec's, and cost is lower than codec, and much easier to
program than codec.

---
Change in v4:
- Rewrite the subject to match something similar to other commits.
- And none of them are compatible with something.
- minItems, then maxItems.
- Drop reset-gpios description
- Remove the repeated reg descriptions and reg constraints.
- Drop redundant spaces.
- Add missing line breaks between blocks and additionalProperties.
- Correct compatibility issue on adc6120 and pcm6240.
- All these chips have only a portion of the functionality of codec,
such as ADC or DAC, and so on, but their audio performance is far
superior to the codec's, and cost is lower than codec, and much easier
to program than codec. Simply one or two register settings can enable
them to work. Init for these chips are hardware reset or software reset.
As to some audio filter params for internal filters, it is up to the
special user cases, which can be saved into the bin file. The default
value also can work well.
- Add blank line before reg.
- remove unneeded items and if branches.
- Add missing compatible devices, such as adc6120, etc.
- Add necessary people into the list for DTS review
- correct misaligned.
- Remove dix4192
- simplify the compatibility

So far, I have no good way to handle the devices with multiple pcmdevices sitting in different i2c buses.
As you know, the gain value highly depends on both the mic-phone position and the mic-phone's own
characters. All these controls have to be open to the product developer or manufacturer. They might
rename them per their products if they want.
As to the stable, my customers and I had developed many productors on arm-based paltforms. At least,
the i2c number is same as the one defined in dts.

In PC, hwid, subsysid and vendorid can help to identify the platform.
But it seemed difficult to get platform id on non-PC system. More often,
different productors from different customers might use the same platform.
In my view, the products developer or manufacturer might rename the firmware
per their products if they want, not limited to the platform.

Controls are exposed to user-space, and it helps if it's easy to
identify which device is which.

But below you are using the I2C address, is this 'stable' enough so that
userspace can still identify the controls and set them accordingly with
amixer or UCM?

generic comment for this patch: you may want to follow the same
convention for error log, sometimes it's %s, or %s: or no %s

I already had a question early on whether these addresses are 'stable',
but here the device address is used to fetch firmware, and there is no
prefix or directory to identify platform-specific settings.

I don't know how this might work for a distribution. There needs to be a
way to detect what system this is at run-time, and make sure we don't
use settings for platform XYZ on platform ABC.

IIRC there is a codec prefix that can be used to uniquify controls,
that's what we used when we have identical amplifier devices in the same
system. Using this prefix would avoid this sort of hard-coding of the
control names proper, in other words let the ASoC framework add a prefix
if needed.

It's not "might rename", it's "are required to rename".

Your solution works if everything is build and configured for ONE board.
That's pretty limiting, even for your own CI and tests.

Could we not add a prefix for the firmware path that either either set
with a subsys_id or vendor_id, and if it doesn't exist with a kernel
parameter or a quirk?

Renaming firmware files is a never-ending source of problems IMHO.

Yes, that's the best approach here - this also lets people assign
meaningful names which makes it easier for users to figure out which
device is which. Set name_prefix when registering the device.

> > In PC, hwid, subsysid and vendorid can help to identify the platform.

TBH it's really not at all reliable for PCs either when you start
looking at motherboards targeted at industrial systems and the like.
There's an awful lot of machines out there that describe themslves as
"To be set by OEM" or whatever sadly.

It's true that vendors will frequently not bother changing the machine
names or other descriptive information when deriving from a reference
design but that's more their problem than upstream's, and the more that
upstream uses the facilities that exist to describe boards the more
likely it is that OEMs will start to pick up on the value of doing
something sensible with them. Pierre is right here, we should just be
using what we've got.

We should probably add a helper that tries to figure out a machine name
to try inserting into the filename for machine specific
firmwares/coefficients. That's probably not even ASoC specific,
there'll likely be other examples where it makes sense. Perhaps the
firmware code might be a good home?
