I turned off smartd and when I cat /dev/zero > /mnt/disk/file, I get the
following errors:

[37978.030178] ata6: no sense translation for status: 0x51
[37978.030185] ata6: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/00 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ

[37978.030188] ata6: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }

There are different errors at the end of the lines:

0xb/00/00 and 0x3/11/04

Anyone know what these mean?

[31230.223515] ata6: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }

I know you are feeling uneasy at best, but I have more or less the same
problems with two Raptors (WD740GD) on two Asus P5GCD-V Deluxe (ICH6) MBs. I
had to pull them out of the box to use the boxes, because they were
constantly freezing...

Report is here:
http://linux.tar.bz/reports/oopses/char/2.6.15.1-K01_P4_server.3.dmesg
(and the dirs above)

So far I got one or two "me too" responses, but that was all. I think the
last working kernel was 2.6.11, but that is a bit too old to test now and
then I was not using libata, AFAIR.

Now one of the boxes uses Seagate ST3250823AS (25d uptime) and the other an
old PATA WDC WD102BB (yes that is only 10GB!).

How reproducible is yours?

We might file to bugzilla? (So far I always had the attention on LKML quick
enough)

Kalin.

Me too... :)

I've written to ide-linux and lkml (subject usually contains SMART
and/or ATA for easy searching.
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=113769509617034&w=2
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-ide&m=113828551519727&w=2

http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-ide&m=113933732903205&w=2

No useful responses but I did gather a few email addresses of people who
had *possibly* related problems.
(I'm just waiting for enough people to complain and raise the profile).

NB: It's my wifes machine so I need to pick my times to get access to
experiment ;)

I spoke too fast.

Still get the errors:

[ 2311.980127] ata3: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/04 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ
0xb/00/00
[ 2311.980134] ata3: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
[ 2311.980138] ata3: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }

But the drive speed is back to normal!

# hdparm -t /dev/sdc

/dev/sdc:
Timing buffered disk reads: 154 MB in 3.01 seconds = 51.12 MB/sec
#

The problem was I had too many SATA devices in my system, I removed two
drives and a Promise SATA/150 and then everything went back to normal, no
more errors and back to 50MB/s+.

FWIW, this could be related to smartctl trying to monitor the disk.
Try this:

smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sdX

If that complains about SMART being disabled, enable it with:

smartctl -d ata -e /dev/sdX

Are you sure this isn't something obvious like an insufficiently large power
supply in the system? I've had strange SATA errors before because I was
running 4 HDs and a 6600GT on a 360W PSU.

I have very similar problems - I spent ?70ish on a decent branded,
reviewed 500W PSU and *still* have the exact same problems.

Not using anything extravagant and using a 500W aspire PSU, good thought
though.
