Hi,

these are the errors i found in my log from a "make -k modules" on Alpha:

drivers/atm/atmtcp.c:

atmtcp.c:278: incompatible types in assignment

drivers/isdn/hardware/avm/b1dma.c:

b1dma.c:32: #error FIXME: driver requires 32-bit platform

drivers/md/lvm.c:

lvm.c:1: #error Broken until maintainers will sanitize kdev_t handling

drivers/md/lvm-snap.c:

lvm-snap.c:248: incompatible type for argument 1 of `block_size'

drivers/net/ethertap.c:

ethertap.c:347: initializer element is not computable at load time
ethertap.c:347: (near initialization for `dev_ethertap.ifindex')

drivers/serial/8250.c:

8250.c:106: `ASYNC_BOOT_AUTOCONF' undeclared here (not in a function)
8250.c:106: `ASYNC_SKIP_TEST' undeclared here (not in a function)
8250.c:106: initializer element is not constant
8250.c:106: (near initialization for `old_serial_port[0].flags')

drivers/usb/serial/whiteheat.c:

whiteheat.c: In function `firm_setup_port':
whiteheat.c:1030: `CMSPAR' undeclared (first use in this function)
whiteheat.c:1030: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
whiteheat.c:1030: for each function it appears in.)

drivers/video/pm3fb.c:

pm3fb.c:137: field `gen' has incomplete type

drivers/video/tridentfb.c:

tridentfb.c:64: field `gen' has incomplete type

sound/drivers/serial-u16550.c:

serial-u16550.c:156: field `buffer_timer' has incomplete type

I'll try to reboot the remaining mess and report how far it gets...

Cheers,

Hi,

Additionally, i got a couple of unresolved symbols at the end of the
compile (stripped those away with versioned symbols which are caused by a
dependent module which failed to compile):

this is a known issue, the following patch (already in Linus' BK tree)
fixes it:

LVM is currently completely broken, see the current discussions about how
to get LVM2 into 2.5 before Halloween.

You only think this is a free country. Like the US the UK spends a lot of
time explaining its a free country because its a police state.

Is this actually safe - suppose the machine has no tsc counter (eg old
x86 or indeed new x86 numa, speedstep using, etc). In that case
do_gettimeofday doesn't appear to be either IRQ safe or fast enough to
use in this way ?

do_gettimeofday doesn't appear to be either IRQ safe or fast enough to
use in this way ?

This is how netif_rx() has worked for a long time. ATM is just
copying the input packet logic.

So why are you complaining now? :-)

Because I was looking over the gettimeoffset code and forgot that
gettimeofday itself takes the xtime_lock 8)

Apologies if this has already been noted or if I'm posting
this to the wrong place/annoying you very busy people needlessly,
but when I run XConfig, in the "Processor Type and Features" tab
it autodetects my processor as a Pentium-4 when in fact it is a

autodetect the processor on that machine (Athlon), so I assume that
feature is still active. Anyways, here's the output from my cpuinfo:

There's no 'autodetect' feature.
Only defconfig, which sets the default option.
These defaults match whatever Linus is currently using, so
it seems he upgraded his Athlon box to a P4 8-)

Ahh, that would make sense then. Well I feel kind of dumb, I
just naturally assumed you had a built in feature that read
the /proc for current hardware or something (and since it worked
for me once (when the Athlon was the default)). Heh, well you
learn something new every day.

Yes, it is, this is fixed in Linus bk tree, snap_init has to be called after
llc_init, this is the patch:

Hi Arnaldo,

Thanks. This fixed it.

However, i still have problems with my ISA busmaster DMA token ring card
in the box.

http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/linux/linux-kernel/2002-10/0179.html still
applies to 2.5.39. After changing ISA_DMA_MASK, my Alpha is now running
2.5.39 :-)

Remaining issues:

- ATY frame buffer not working (black screen with jumpy cursor)
- ALSA doesn't compile (this seems to be cause by missing include here and
there)

Cheers,

Because I was looking over the gettimeoffset code and forgot that
gettimeofday itself takes the xtime_lock 8)

It used to be possible to implement this lockless using a $(sizeof
xtime)-bit load. But once you start adding complications such as
wall_jiffies, it isn't feasible anymore.

The next idea is to have a tick cookie that could later be converted
to/from a full timeval. This trick doesn't work on things like Alpha
where the guarenteed life of the tick is only 6 seconds or something
like that.

Most of the time the timestamp isn't even used.

If someone can propose other ideas I'm ready and listening :-)

It looks like LLC is the culprit for me:

Arnaldo fixed this recently, it is a LLC bug.

- After shutting down the Alpha with a "reboot" command, the last message
on the console was "Rebooting...". After that... nothing. Not even a
power-off - power-on helped, anymore. I just get 4 beeps from my Alpha
now, indicating an invalid firmware checksum... So 2.5.39 seems to be an
alpha2brick release :-(

Strange. It works fine for me on sx164 and nautilus.
I could guess either a) some driver bug that accidentally hit the flash-ROM
area or b) just a terrible coincidence.

I hope that your fail-safe booter is intact...

Ivan.

Hmm, shutting down didn't work on my Nautilus with 2.5.39+Ivan's
Nautilus patches, either. It did not nuke the firmware, though...
