Subject: [Bluez-users] how to detect if a device is up.

suppose you manage a list of 'seen' but not necessarily paired devices.
How can you figure out if a certain device is UP or not ?
l2ping apparently not since you need to be paired with that device or else you
get permission denied

How about an inquiry? You can also use name requests for instance. We use this
in kdebluetooth for the device discovery service to poll undiscoverable
devices. But you can't do that frequently and for a lot of devices of course.
Apart from that, if you get "permission denied" with l2ping, then the device
*is* reachable, isn't it?

for remote device you have to page them.

This is only true is the remote device uses security mode 3.
