Subject: [Bluez-users] Cannot transfer files via OBEX

Hello, list. This is my first post.

I just got myself a Bluetooth 1.2 USB dongle, listed by `lsusb' as:
Bus 004 Device 005: ID 1131:1001 Integrated System Solution Corp.
KY-BT100 Bluetooth Adapter

I have a Sony Ericsson Z520a phone, which incorporates a bluetooth and
infrared adapter.

I am using BlueZ (libs, utils) version 2.25 on a Gentoo system.

uname -a:
Linux refinery.twat.com.ar 2.6.16-suspend2-r8 #1 PREEMPT Mon Jul
31 19:05:52 ART 2006 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2400+ GNU/Linux

I have 3 main goals:
1) Transfer files between my computer and the phone.
2) Synchronize my PIM with the phone.
3) Use the phone as a modem to connect my laptop computer to the net
using GPRS.

I think you guys can help me with points 1) and 3), am I correct?
One step at a time, of course.

[obexftp]
I have tried to transfer simple text files between my computer and the
phone, but I have been unsuccessful. I am attaching a session log and
its corresponding dump for a simple file push from the PC to the phone.

[konqueror]
I have also installed kbluetoothd, which lets me browse the phone's
"filesystem" using the OBEX KIOSlave. Whenever I try to copy a file from
or to the phone using Konqueror, the file transfer dialog shows that
some bytes have been transferred, it even shows different data rates. It
is usually in the 10-20 KiB/s range. It apparently transfers some bytes
and then it stops with the message:

Connection error: Transport is broken

I have also tried with the FUSE OBEX module, but that didn't work. Of
course, it relies on obexftp.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if I missed
something in the problem description.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply, Steven. Unfortunately, that didn't help, either.

After testing on my laptop, then on my desktop, reconnects,
enabling/disabling bluetooth, installing packages and testing some more,
it started working. Magically[1].

[533] # obexftp -b 00:16:20:F1:47:68 -B 6 -p AppleZ52046400.thm
Browsing 00:16:20:F1:47:68 ...
Channel: 6
Connecting...done
Sending "AppleZ52046400.thm"...|done
Disconnecting...done

[524] # ussp-push /dev/rfcomm0 MailaRed47045.thm Themes/Maila.thm
name=MailaRed47045.thm, size=266240
Connection established

It looks like the phone is deciding where to put the files. If I try to
name them "Themes/themename.thm", then that's the exact name they get,
inside the Themes folder. Same thing for Pictures, Sounds, etc.

[1] Not so magically. I think my USB dongle is of a questionable
quality, or maybe it is the phone. Suspended opinion until further
investigation.

I have to move the phone *very* close to the USB dongle for the transfer
to work. Almost touching it. Otherwise it just stalls for a few seconds
then it exits as it did in my previous logs.

One curiosity: l2ping replies are received even if I move the phone 3
meters away from the computer, without affecting the latency
substantially. Shouldn't the OBEX protocol be more friendly to
connection errors? Or is it not the protocol but the programs? ussp-push
behaves in the same way.

Thanks everyone for all the fish, will come back to this issue if more
problems arise, which means I guess I'll definitely be back soon.

For some reason, with Sony Ericsson phones, you need to use -C instead
of -c to upload, even if the directory already exist.

Same problem.

Can anyone please at least tell me what's going on? Something that might
be obvious to a developer can be hard enough to find for a new user.

It's pointless, no matter how many different configurations I try, I
just can't upload anything to the phone. Am I doing something wrong? Is
it supposed to be possible to upload, say, a theme using obexft -b
<device> -B <channel> -c Themes -p <theme-name>?

The dump always shows a piece of the file (hex dump) and then:
< ACL data: handle 1 flags 0x02 dlen 8

Unfortunately, that doesn't work. In fact I can get a listing without
specifying the channel since obexftp autodetects the channel when you
don't, and that works fine. The problem is with file transfers.

Yeah, thanks. I'm using Opensync with kdepim for this, but also have some connection
problems. This isn't a BlueZ question, so I'll leave it for the Opensync guys.
