Subject: alg: cipher: Test 1 failed on encryption for aes-asm

On my new thinkpad with a Intel Core2 Duo T9600 I reproducibly get
this message during boot:

I'd assume it's not a hardware but, so my the assembly code doesn't
like the debian toolchain? It's

Weird. I've got exactly the same versions as you, using yesterday's
Linus git tree, and it works just fine on a Core 2 Quad Q6600. From
/proc/crypto after boot:

I get the same error on 64-bit mode. If aes_x86_64 is compiled as
module, everything is OK. But if it is compiled as built-in, the error
message print during system boot. Because aes_x86_64 may be registered
before aes_generic, but the tables used by AES have not been generated
when aes_x86_64 is registered.

This can be resolved by the following patch.

Fix a bug of aes_x86_64, aes_generic initialization order issue.

If aes_x86_64 and aes_generic are compiled as builtin, the
initialization order is undetermined. That is, aes_x86_64 may be
initilized before aes_generic is initilized, but aes_x86_64 depends on
tables generated in aes_generic initialization code. aes_x86_64 can
not work before aes_generic is initialized, so that cause register
time testing failed with following error message:

I think that is not easy. Not all architecture follow the same directory
structure arch/<x>/crypto. And arch/x86/crypto is used by user mode
linux too.

Right, relying on link order is hazardous.

However, since the table isn't that large we might as well compute
it once and for all, like this:

crypto: aes - Precompute tables

The tables used by the various AES algorithms are currently
computed at run-time. This has created an init ordering problem
because some AES algorithms may be registered before the tables
have been initialised.

This patch gets around this whole thing by precomputing the tables.

You don't have to trick with Makefiles. You could use subsys_initcall()
in cryptomgr & algapi and for instance rootfs_initcall() for the generic
aes to ensure that it comes before the asm version but after the
subsystem. _Or_ you could use late_initcall() in the asm version. After
a second look I thing the late initcall variant looks better.

That patch is "big" but should not break anything. I still prefer to fix
it the other way via the init call order: it is smaller patch and would
be a nice example for further modules which might rely on each other
like aes does.

No matter what you pick as your final solution, should I send a
's/module_init/subsys_initcall/' patch for cryptomgr & algapi?

cryptomgr already uses subsys_initcall and algapi doesn't need
it yet because it only registers the proc entry.
