Subject: data corruption with ext4 (from 2.6.27.4) exposed by rtorrent

Some person already reported this. I'm having the same problem.
http://marc.info/?l=linux-ext4&m=122557056518246&w=2
rtorrent is a bittorrent client that makes heavy use of mmap instead
of read/write to avoid needless duplication of data. It has exposed
other bugs in the past (mmap bug in 2.6.19).
http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no
Downloading a big torrent (>2GB) with rtorrent triggers it more times
than not. The bigger the torrent, the higher the likeliness of
failure. When the torrent is finished, if a hash check is forced by
pressing control-r on the torrent, some blocks will fail.
The torrent doesn't need to be a single file, but can be a series of
small files that add up enough.
Downloading on ext3 or XFS instead is 100% fine.
I've discarded posix fallocate as the culprit by building rtorrent
without the patch that adds that (and doing a du just in case,
definitively not preallocating).
Filesystem is ~1.4TB. I've also reproduced it on a 200GB partition.
The system is: Linux kaguya 2.6.27.4 #1 SMP Mon Oct 27 14:43:19 UTC
2008 x86_64 Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330 @ 1.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
No kernel patches were applied.

Can both of you send the output of "dumpe2fs -h /dev/<disk device>" of
the filesystem in question? The thing which I'm most interested in is
whether the extents feature was enabled or not. (i.e., was this a
freshly made ext4 filesystem, or a ext3 filesystem mounted under ext4,
and with which features eanbled?)

Thanks,

OK. In my case it's a freshly made default ext4 filesystem.

Ok. It's a recently made ext4 using mkfs.ext4dev from latest
sysresccd. Inmediatly after making it, I moved in my root from an old

I have set up a debug torrent at:
http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/1676328/?rel=1225725960

It contains four identical files that were generated with:
dd if=/dev/zero of=zero.test0 count=1M

My upload speed is limited (512 kbit/s), but I hope this may help.

The following testcase was used to trigger the infamous MAP_SHARED
dirty flag bug. Maybe it could be of some help here too:

I tested this further and it turned out that this bug is not extents
related. I get the same hash failures on a partition formatted with:
-O "^extent".

Besides the torrent failures, ext4 also managed to corrupt two
dspam sqlite3 databases on my system. (After the corruption I
get the following error:
*** glibc detected *** dspam: free(): invalid pointer: 0x0000000001e71c58 ***

and the only solution is to restore the database from ext3 backup)

My conclusion is that ext4 is not yet ready for prime time.
I moved all my data back to ext3.

I think this would more likely indicate a userspace bug, though, not
something related to ext4.

Cryptooctoploid,

Based on some reflection and further discussion on #ext4, I have a
theory which we need to try to prove/disprove that it may be related
to memory pressure combined with the delayed allocation code.

If you've already dismantled your ext4 setup, maybe you can't test
this, but it would be interesting to know mounting with the -o
nodelalloc makes the problem go away. Also, how much memory do you
have in your system and is your system often under memory pressure?
(i.e., your system often uses swap, and where the amount of free
memory is often near the low water mark where it is trying to evict
memory either by dropping clean pages or writing dirty pages back to
the filesystem and/or swap).

Thanks for remembering!

The test case triggers corruption with 2.6.28-rc3 + ext4 patch queue:
. bunch of errors like
Chunk 71637 corrupted (0-1339) (2756-4095)
Expected 213, got 0
with default mount.
. nodelalloc is ok.

It's useful to know that you were able to trigger corruption using the
test case.

How much memory did you have on your system, and how much memory was
free when you ran the test case? I wasn't able to reproduce it using
the test case, but I have 4 gigs of memory. One theory which is
currently being kicked around is that it is a combination of delayed
allocation and memory pressure. Disabling delayed allocation by
mounting with -o nodelalloc does seem to make the problem go away.
The next question is whether the problem is more easily triggerred
when under memory pressure.

I don't know.

I was currently testing other kernels, but, right, I will retest with more memory.

Yes, -o nodelalloc resolves the issue here.

I have 2GB of memory and my machine is not under any kind of
memory pressure normally.

with -m 2048 I do not observe the problem.

I should add that with 2.6.28-rc3 + ext4 patch queue, I am observing
what seems to be lockdep bug:
[ 31.603020] BUG: key c9f315a8 not in .data!

That is the reason I was testing other kernels.

Aneesh has some new patches in the ext4 patch queue that add new
lockdep annotations. I'm guessing there's a problem there. Aneesh,
can you look into this? Solofo, can you send the .config you used
in case it was unique to replicating the problem?

As we talked in #ext4, I've downloaded that big torrent (14GB) with
nodelalloc. Hash check was fine for such a big torrent which also had
so many peers, so I'm inclined to think that nodelalloc does indeed
make the problem go away.

Whatever's wrong, it's definitively delalloc-related.

I also triggered the bug on my hardware (x86_64, with 2GB memory)
while running Linus' test program with TARGETSIZE (1600 << 20).
The symptoms are exactly the same as in the famous former bug,
that Linus discovered.

Here is an excerpt from the output:

The patch aneesh-9-fix-lockdeep-recursive-locking-warning
should add the key in .data. Do you have a stack trace ?
Can you find out which lock the lockdep is warning about

I suppose this is related with the key:
[ 31.305491] BUG: key ca85b5a8 not in .data!

Could you explain more?

I am not observing it outside of kvm.

I think below patch is needed. But even with the patch I am hitting the
corruption. So patch doesn't solve the problem. The change from tag
dirty lookup to index lookup should not have much impact because we are
writing from first_page to next_page - 1 contiguous page which should be
marked dirty anyway because we did a tag dirty lookup in
write_cache_pages and we did a lock page there.

commit 714736001d68cff26258bb80891c566a65a682c2
Author: Aneesh Kumar K.V <[email protected]>
Date: Thu Nov 6 09:01:21 2008 +0530

ext4: Fix the delalloc writepages to allocate blocks at the right offset.

When iterating through the pages with all mapped buffer_heads
we failed to update the b_state value. This result in allocating
blocks at logical offset 0.
