Subject: [syzbot] INFO: task hung in ext4_fallocate

Hi Everyone,

syzbot has reported a task hung issue in ext4_fallocate, crash report
can be seen at the bottom of the email.

When I tried to reproduce this issue on mainline linux kernel using the
reproducer provided by syzbot, I see an endless loop of following errors :-

Same is seen with the LTS and chromeOS 5.10, 5.15 kernel. In case I add
some debugging statements in the ext4_fallocate function, they are all
printed endlessly too.
I am not sure if an infinite loop is also termed as task hung but it
would be great if someone expert in fixing filesystem issues take a look
into this.
I am attaching the reproducer and config file in case anyone wants to
test it locally.

Please note that maliciously corrupted file system is considered low
priority by ext4 developers. If this is something which is important
to Google, then it needs to fund more headcount so that we have time
to take a look at these things. There has been plenty of discussions
about how syzbot is effectively a denial of service attack on upstream
resources, and the only way we can respond is to down-prioritize such
bug reports.

This is *especially* true when we receive reports from private syzbot
instances where we don't have any of the features provided by syzbot
console --- including convenient access to the file system image that
was mounted as part of the test, the ability to use #syz test to try
out patches --- and more importantly, so we can introduce debugging
messages and using the syzbot testing facility to run the tests.

If you really are concerned about the threat model of users picking up
random USB thumb drives that they found in the parking lot, consider
running fsck.ext4 -f on the file system first, and if the file system
checker is not able to fix the file system, refuse to mount it.
Alternatively, consider using cros-vm, and mounting the file system in
the guest-kernel so that the VMM provides an additional sandbox layer.

Anyway, please provide a link to a public Syzkaller dashboard report,
and we'll take a look at it when we have time...

cat /sys/kernel/debug/block/nvme1n1/hctx*/busy
doesn't show any active IO. Nor does the issue resolve when resetting the
controller - so I don't think this is a disk/block level issue.


This is on 8f1b4600373f, with one local, unrelated, commit ontop.

Unfortunately, so far, I've only reproduced this every couple hours of
interactive work, so bisecting isn't really feasible. I've not hit it on 6.5
over a considerably longer time, so I am reasonably confident this isn't an
older issue.

Unless you are using a corrupted file system (e.g., there are EXT4-fs
error messages in dmesg), it's likely a different issue.

There is issue here which doesn't involve a corrupted file system
recently reported:

However, *please* let's not conflate bug reports unless we know they
are the same thing. It's better to keep reports separate, as opposed
to having users see multiple bug reports with vaguely the same
symptoms (say, like a headache) and pestering a doctor at a cocktail
party claiming that *of* *course* their issue is the same as the one
they read about in some vlog because the symptoms are the same.

(This is why I hate, hate, HATE bug reports via Launchpad, which tend
very much to be a flaming hott mess....)

Can you give us details about (a) what kind of block device; are you
using dm-crypt, or just a HDD or a SSD? If an SSD, what kind of SSD?
What CPU architecture is it? And can you send me the output of
dumpe2fs -h <block device>? And while the file system is mounted,
please send the contents of /proc/fs/<block-device>/options, e.g.:

Indeed quite possibly unrelated - the only reason that I mentioned it here was
the fact that so far I've only hit it in 6.6-rc*, not earlier.

I've since then "downgraded" to 6.5.5, without hitting the issue so far,
despite continuing to run a similar workload for most of the day.

I did actually find ext4 messages in dmesg, but only during the latest boot
into 6.5.5, despite encountering the hang four times (resolved via reboot each
time).

NVMe, Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB. No dm_crypt, raid or whatever.

smartctl / nvme smart-log indicates no data correctness errors or such. Not
that that's a guarantee of anything.

A forced fsck doesn't find any corruption, but did report a number of
Inode 82984754 extent tree (at level 2) could be narrower. Optimize<y>?
style "issues".

x86-64 (i9-9880H in a ThinkPad X1 Extreme 2nd). The laptop does have a battery
that's not, uhm, perfect, anymore (turning off while supposedly still having
around 15% capacity), so there have been a few out-of-power hard "shutdowns".

However, fullness of this filesystem varies substantially over time, as I use
it for developing / testing postgres, albeit primarily when travelling. I was
e.g. benchmarking bulk-loading of data (knowingly on a mediocre SSD) at the
time of the last crash, space usage during that goes up by a few hundred GB,
with the data being deleted afterwards.

Sorry about the previous html formatted email.

Since the issue that I reported is not reproducable locally, to confirm
if it happens on the mainline kernel or not,
we did a #syz test: https://github.com/torvalds/linux master

But it wasn't reproduced on the mainline kernel so it is very unlikely
that the issue you are seeing is same as this one.

regression is in the list of tracked issues, but I'm a bit lost about
the state of things:

Shreeya Patel: if I understand what you wrote above right the issue
(which maybe only happened with a maliciously corrupted fs, which is
kinda unsupported) doesn't happen anymore? Then I guess I can remove
this thread from the tracking. That being said:

Andres Freund: as it seems you have a different issue, have you or
somebody else done anything to get us closer to a solution (like a
bisection)? Doesn't look like it, but it's quite possible that I missed
something. I just want to ensure that this is not lost if you care about
the problems you encountered; makes we wonder if reporting it separately
(e.g. in a new thread) might be wise.

I've indeed not performed a bisection - unfortunately it doesn't quite seem
viable at this point, I've only hit the issue after using the kernel
interactively for several hours. Being confident that some kernel version
doesn't hit the issue would require using a kernel version for quite a long
time...

Hi Thorsten,

Just to clarify, this issue is still seen on upstream 5.10 and earlier
kernels.
I can confirm that we did not see this issue being reproduced on
mainline kernel using #sys test feature.

So it is possible that it has been fixed between 5.10 and mainline
kernel but we don't know the fix commit.

Also, as Ted said this is a low priority issue so I will mark this as
resolved for now so regzbot can stop tracking this.


#regzbot resolve: fix commit is unknown but it has been resolved
somewhere between 5.10 and mainline kernel.

course, because this was a private syzbot instance, there was syzbot
dashboard given, and the reproducer had the serial number filed off
(there is a URL in the comments at the beginning of the reproducer for
a *reason*), so *I* couldn't run "#syz test".

Huh?

Reading between the lines, it looks like the only similarity between
what was happening in the 5.10 kernel and the mainline kernel was that
it did not *hang* the kernel, but it was generating a stream of
EXT4-fs error messages. Well, if you take a deliberately corrupted
kernel, and mount it with errors=continue, and then keep pounding it
with lots of file system operations, of *course* it will continually
spew ext4 errors message. That is "Working As Intended" by
*definition*.

And this is why I maintain that irresponsible use of syzbot is
effectively a denial of service attack on upstream maintainers.

At this point, just as upstream policy is that debugging ancient LTS
kernels is not something upstream maintainers to do (and attempting to
trick them to debug it by claiming it is found in mainline is *really*
uncool), if there are bugs that are reported using private syzbot
instances, or where there isn't a URL to a public syzbot dashboard,
they should be treated as P4 priority or worse....

I stated this because at that time we didn't know we could use #syz test
feature on buganizer tickets as well.
I locally tested it using the reproducer and I was seeing an endless
loops of errors which I thought
is something not an expected behaviour.

This was happening on mainline as well as 5.10 kernel.

This is what I actually wanted to understand if the loops of errors were
something of concern or not.
I'm not an expert in the area of filesystem so I assumed loops of errors
that I was seeing
shouldn't be an intented behaviour.

We never had the intention to trick you into debugging this issue. When
I reported this issue,
I did it on the basis of what I saw after using the reproducer locally.
After some days when I came to know we could use #syz test in buganizer,
I tested mainline and 5.10 kernel again through it
but I didn't see it getting reproduced on mainline kernel and hence I
said it didn't reproduce upstream in my second email.

I should have given you more context when I said it doesn't happen in
upstream kernel so I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
