no major change from V6. I just rebased it to 3.7-rc1 and run

Subject: [PATCH V7 01/23] ext4: Move extra inode read to a new function.

Currently, in ext4_iget we do a simple check to see whether
there does exist some information starting from the end
of i_extra_size. With inline data added, this procedure
is more complicated. So move it to a new function named
ext4_iget_extra_inode.

Subject: [PATCH V7 03/23] ext4: Add the basic function for inline data support.

Implement inline data with xattr.
Now we use "system.data" to store xattr, and the xattr will
be extended if the i_size is increased while we don't release
the space during truncate.

Subject: [PATCH V7 07/23] ext4: Add delalloc support for inline data.

From: Tao Ma <[email protected]>

For delayed allocation mode, we write to inline data if the file
is small enough. And in case of we write to some offset larger
than the inline size, the 1st page is dirtied, so that
ext4_da_writepages can handle the conversion. When the 1st page
is initialized with blocks, the inline part is removed.

Subject: [PATCH V7 09/23] ext4: Refactor __ext4_check_dir_entry to accepts start and size.

__ext4_check_dir_entry is used to check whether the de is over
the block boundary. Now with inline data, it could be within the
block boundary while exceeds the inode size. So check this function

Subject: [PATCH V7 10/23] ext4: Create __ext4_insert_dentry for dir entry insertion.

The old add_dirent_to_buf handles all the work related to the
work of adding dir entry to a dir block. Now we have inline data,
so create 2 new function __ext4_find_dest_de and __ext4_insert_dentry
that do the real work and let add_dirent_to_buf call them.

Subject: [PATCH V7 08/23] ext4: Make ext4_init_dot_dotdot for inline dir usage.

Currently, the initialization of dot and dotdot are encapsulated in
ext4_mkdir and also bond with dir_block. So create a new function
named ext4_init_new_dir and the initialization is moved to
ext4_init_dot_dotdot. Now it will called either in the normal non-inline
case(rec_len of ".." will cover the whole block) or when we converting an
inline dir to a block(rec len of ".." will be the real length). The start
of the next entry is also returned for inline dir usage.

Subject: [PATCH V7 18/23] ext4: let ext4_rename handle inline dir.

In case of we rename a dir, ext4_rename has to read the dir block
and change its dotdot's information. The old ext4_rename encapsulated
the dir_block read into itself. So this patch try to add a new function
ext4_get_first_dir_block which get the dir buffer information so the
ext4_rename can handle it properly. As it will also change the parent
inode number, we return the parent_de and let ext4_rename handles it
more easily.

ext4_find_entry is also changed so that the caller(rename) can tell whether
the found entry is an inlined one or not and journaling the corresponding
buffer head.

Subject: [PATCH V7 15/23] ext4: make ext4_delete_entry generic.

Currently ext4_delete_entry is used only for dir entry
removing from a dir block. So let us create a new function
ext4_generic_delete_entry and this function takes a entry_buf
and a buf_size so that it can be used for inline data.

Subject: [PATCH V7 11/23] ext4: let add_dir_entry handle inline data properly.

This patch let add_dir_entry handle the inline data case. So the
dir is initialized as inline dir first and then we can try to add
some files to it, when the inline space can't hold all the entries,
a dir block will be created and the dir entry will be moved to it.

Also for an inlined dir, "." and ".." are removed and we only use
4 bytes to store the parent inode number. These 2 entries will be
added when we convert an inline dir to a block-based one.

Subject: [PATCH V7 20/23] ext4: Evict inline data out if we needs to strore xattr in inode.

Now we stores data in the inode, but in case we need to store some
xattrs and inode doesn't have enough space, Andreas suggested that

with this), but probably the right thing to do is to deal with
punching a hole in an inline data file by setting the region of the
file to zero --- after all, that's how we handle punching

support inline data files the same way, especially since that should
be a relatively easy change.

OK, so in general, EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA is a flag that show that
the file has a potential to be inlined, but there is no guarantee it is
inlined.

So when the inode is created and the volume has inline-data support,
this flag is set. And when the write_begin comes, we have no idea
whether it is OK or not to create an inline file, so if this flag is
set, we just try to call the inline-data stuff to see whether it works.
If it succeeds, that is cool. But if not, this flag is cleared and we
will not trap to inline-data stuff for the future write_begin. The
reason why ext4_has_inline_data() doesn't work here is that a new file
has no inline data but has the potential to be inlined.

As in the concall, it seems that you still have some questions about
this flag, so in general if a file has inline data,
EXT4_STAT_MAY_INLINE_DATA is definitely set(in delalloc, it is used as
another indication, will be explained later) while if a file has this
flag, it can be inlined or not. And if an inode doesn't have this flag,
it is definitely not an inline file.

I will explain one by one with the result I get from 'grep'.

fs/ext4/inline.c:155: ext4_set_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
Set when we found inline data from an inode disk read. It is OK since an
inline data file should have this flag.

fs/ext4/inline.c:287: EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
If we can't create the inline data for this file, clear this flag.

fs/ext4/inline.c:360: ext4_set_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
set this flag when we update the inline data.

fs/ext4/inline.c:376: if (!ext4_test_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA))
In ext4_prepare_inline_data, we check this flag and if the flag is
cleared, it isn't an inline one. If it is set, go on to see whether we
need to create or update it. We can't check ext4_has_inline_data here
since the inline data region may not be initialized yet.

fs/ext4/inline.c:447: ext4_clear_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
Inline data is destroyed, so clear it.

fs/ext4/inline.c:532: ext4_clear_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
In conversion, if this file hasn't be inlined, just clear the flag, so
that we will treat it in the normal way.

fs/ext4/inline.c:794: ext4_clear_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
The same conversion as above, but happens in the da path.

fs/ext4/inline.c:815: ext4_clear_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
end of da conversion. This is *tricky*. Since this is delayed
allocation, we don't want to touch the on-disk format now. Just clear
this flag so that:
1. da_write_end will know that we should handle this like normal
file(work with fs/ext4/inode.c:2713)
2. future da_write_begin will try the normal way since this flag is
cleared(work with fs/ext4/inode.c:2574:)
3. finally in da_writepages, when we see this flag is cleared while
ext4_has_inline_data is set, destroy the inline data and prepare for the
real block allocation(work with fs/ext4/inode.c:2242)

fs/ext4/inline.c:1096: ext4_set_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
inline data is re-created, so set the flag.

fs/ext4/inline.c:1850: ext4_clear_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA);
fallocate conversion. The same as other conversion.

fs/ext4/inode.c:906: if (ext4_test_inode_state(inode,
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA)) {
In ext4_write_begin, we have no idea of whether this can be inlined or

Hi Tao,

I've been going over the patch series, and one of the things that I
started thinking about was whether we really needed the inline_data
flag, strictly speaking. After all, the information will be in the
extended attribute space in the inode table, so it's relatively cheap
to search the ibody looking for the extended attribute, and then to
cache that information in a state flag. That might be a useful thing
to do, so I'd welcome your comments about whether you think this would
be a good idea.

But this brought up a bigger issue, which is the one downside of doing
this is the potential locking overhead before fetching the information
out of the extended attribute --- and that's when I realized the
locking is currently *missing*. At the moment, the VFS layer takes
i_mutex before calling the per-filesystem extended attribute
functions, and that takes care of the locking. However, the inline
data patches call ext4_xattr_ibody_find() and ext4_xattr_ibody_set()
directly, and they are not taking the i_mutex first.

Hence, we have potential races between the a process setting an
userspace extended attribute, or selinux setting a security.* xattr,
and the new code which tries reading or writing inline data.

Could you take a look at this, please?

I was thinking of this, but that would make e2fsck hard to tell whether
the inline data is OK or not. Currently, we can make sure it is inline
data if both the flag and the "system.data" are set correctly. Without
this flag, So what do you think we should do in e2fsck? Having said
that, yes, in the kernel side, there are only 3 places using/checking
this flag and it can be removed easily.

I think ext4_inode->xattr_sem should protect us? When we do xattr
corresponding operation, we just do
down_write/read(&EXT4_I(inode)->xattr_sem), so we should be fine with
this type of operation. Am I missing something here?

We're not taking the xattr_sem in ext4_find_inline_data() before we
call ext4_xattr_ibody_find(). So I think we need something like this:

Actually ext4_find_inline_data is only called in ext4_iget when we
initialize an inode from the disk and that's the reason why I didn't add
this lock. So maybe the name isn't obvious to the reader. :(

Having said that, I think it should be safe for us to add this lock so
that any future user may abuse it without any worry about the xattr
lock. So go ahead with it.
