Subject: question on non-kernel patch

Hi John,
We have a change to the iwlwifi driver for the near future
which will dynamically load a different module based on the version
of microcode installed on the system. The driver does a
request_module_nowait after obtaining the firmware file loaded as part
of modprobe. This all works fine, however unloading the module is not
symmetrical/straight forward.
It looks like there are capabilities already implemented to
make this easy. If I put the following script into /etc/modprobe.d
then modprobe iwlwifi-r will do the right thing.
It is backward compatible with the current iwlwifi driver.
How do I get this out in the community before we submit the patch that
would break iwlwifi removal?

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure -- this seems like a peculiar
situation. Can you go into more detail about why this seems necessary?

Should Intel just proceed with their kernel patch and not worry about
the 'modprobe -r' complications, as Michal Marek suggested?

How large are these two modules? With debugging disabled, iwlwifi is less than
250K, which is not that large. Perhaps you could load both, or build both into a
monolithic iwlwifi. The appropriate calls can be setup after the fw is read. Any
globals in the two routines need to be unique anyway, otherwise the build will
fail when iwlwifi is built in and not compiled as a module.

Do users need to remove modules at all? I doubt it. And if they do, they
will use rmmod, because it is faster to type :). If your concern is
debugging bugreports from users, then simply instruct them to run
'modprobe -r iwlwifi_mod1; modprobe -r iwlwifi_mod2; modprobe -r
iwlwifi' instead of just 'modprobe -r iwlwifi'. Removing a module that
is not loaded will do nothing, it won't even print an error message.

Yes, I would just go ahead and wouldn't worry too much about
additional modules being pulled-in which also need to be unloaded, in
case something really needs to unloaded.

We usually do not support module unloading during normal system
operation. It is mainly a nice and convenient debugging and developing
tool, which people who use it will figure out how to do it.
