Hello Developer Friends:

I'm writing because I'm having problems with the WiFi and Bluetooth interfaces
provided by the "Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230AGN" card in my laptop. I am
running Fedora 14 Linux / 64 Bit, with the latest 2.6 kernel provided by their
repositories (2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64).

Please CORRECT me if I am wrong, but as I understand it, the drivers for this
(and similar devices) are supposed to be these:

root# locate iwlwifi
/lib/modules/2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl3945.ko

/lib/modules/2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlagn.ko

/lib/modules/2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlcore.ko

But these kernel loadable modules do not seem to work. Let me show you why...

An "lspci -k" doesn't show any of these kernel modules bound to my
WiFi/Bluetooth
card hardware (which, again, is a Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230AGN device).
See here....

root# lspci -k

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: JMC250 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller
(rev 05)
Subsystem: CLEVO/KAPOK Computer Device 7100
Kernel driver in use: jme <--- GOOD for the Ethernet device
Kernel modules: jme <--- GOOD

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 0e31 (rev a1)
Subsystem: CLEVO/KAPOK Computer Device 7100
Kernel driver in use: nvidia <--- GOOD for the video
controller.
Kernel modules: nvidia, nouveau, nvidiafb <--- GOOD

04:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6230 (rev
34)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6230 AGN
Kernel driver in use: <---- missing / not bound. NO GOOD
Kernel modules: <---- missing / not bound. NO GOOD

This is true even after I manually do a "root# modeprobe iwlagn" (etc.)

So it looks like (1) either these driver are not working for this device and
needs to be fixed or *enhanced* to support this card; or (2) this is not the
driver for this Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230AGNdevice, and one needs to
be written. So neither Wireless nor Bluetooth work because devices cannot be
accessed.

Many CLEVO made laptops will ship with this card (if they have not
already), and will need a working Linux device driver for it.

Btw... Here is my post about this missing driver to the Fedora and other
forums...

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1442632#post1442632

Can someone help me out with this please? Thank you

Thank you,

One more time... hopefully this one doesn't wrap around
on anyone on this list (apologies for the repeat send).

Hello Ozan:

You know that's actually a great point. You just reminded
me of something! I have noticed that, while the laptop
Bluetooth indicator light does toggle On-and-Off each
time I press Fn-12; the WiFi laptop indicator light does
*not*. It has never turned on (*ever*), no matter how many
times I press Fn-11 (the key combination to toggle WiFi
On-and-Off). I just assumed it was the driver issue I
was having (and it may still be).

Here are your rfkill outputs...

Executed when Bluetooth light was on - RX/TX enabled; WiFi light is off.)
root@p170hm# rfkill list

0: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Note: Don't let the above 2nd bluetooth interface
beguile you. This is a tiny bluetooth dongle I
temporarily attached to a USB port because this
same N-6320 card also provides the laptop's bluetooth
capability. But being connected to a USB port, Fn-12
will not affect it showing up in the output of rfkill
(see later below - it will remain in the output).

1: hci1: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

(Executed when Bluetooth light was off -- RX/TX disabled; WiFi light is off)
root@# rfkill list

0: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

In either case, I see no reference to a WiFi device.

Hope that helps some more.
Regards & Thanks,
Noel

With all that provided, the only thing I didn't investigate pursuant to your

email was the "compat-wireless". I will do so via the URL:

Thank you, and do let me know your thoughts given the above additional
information,
and if anything else would be helpful.

PS: My only side comment is that suggestion (3) was not applicable. My email
question was peppered with "hello friends", "correct me if I'm wrongs", "and
please and thank yous". Fair enough that some key output I didn't realize would
be
necessary was omitted (my bad, as I'm a compute infrastructure architect not a
kernel module author), but I did my best to get this dialog started well. =:)
Thanks.

Nothing needs to be done, these devices are already supported.

See the linked line in:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=blob;f=drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl-6000.c;h=af505bcd7ae0977f1095fc02ce8b9553f70dd86d;hb=HEAD#l601

They have been supported since the 6th of May last year.

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=1808972f16adba592ceb10a47dee42ef8ee39cee

This support hit mainline in 2.6.36.

May I suggest that you upgrade your kernel or, failing that, use
compat-wireless. You should also make sure that you have the firmware
installed, it's in the iwl6000g2b-firmware package. (See:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/acls/name/iwl6000g2b-firmware)

That said, given that F14 ships the firmware for this device, I'm
guessing it's supported somehow. You *did* install the firmware,
right?

Next time you submit a bug report like this, make sure that you:
1. Include the dmesg output for an attempt to load the driver. In your
case the output of "dmesg | grep iwl" would be a good start.
Completely unloading the driver and then re-loading it while recording
the output would be better.
2. Include lspci-n output as this means that we can match up your card
with the list supported in the driver - given the number of PCI ids
out there, we cannot match a text description like you provided to an
actual card as there's likely to be several different versions out
there with the same name, but differing IDs. If yours has a slightly
different ID than the officially supported ones, then it won't work.
3. Don't treat us like idiots.

Hope that helps,

Not really enough information, but yeah, the first 6 lines are the
tail end of initialising the wireless subsystem, and the last two are
printed when the driver loads. Given that nothing mentions the driver
actually detecting the card, then I'm guessing it isn't supported by
this version of the driver.

Ok, with this I can determine that the card wasn't added with the
initial batch of cards I linked you to, but it appears to be fully
supported as it was added later.

This is probably your best option as it appears that the stock driver
in the F14 2.6.35 kernel doesn't support your card.

My issue with your email wasn't the text or the content, it was with
the tone of it. Your email implied that your issue was something that
we needed to be stepped through and that it was our fault. I
understand that having hardware on your brand new laptop not work is
an annoyance, especially when it's the built-in wireless - I have
bought several different pieces of hardware only to discover that
support under Linux simply doesn't exist, or requires a lot of work -
but your problem could have been stated in less words with a calmer
tone of voice.

As for the details you provided, they were more than sufficient for
the first stage of a request for help.

I hope that installing compat-wireless goes as smoothly for you as it
does for me, and that after installing it your card works properly.

Thanks,

Can you run

rfkill list

and send the output? Are there any WLAN toggles on your laptop (a hard switch or Fn + Fx combination)?
If yes try playing with them.
