I don't know why somebody decided to keep a cached copy of beacon rssi in a
variable called 'noiseFloor', but the caching is unnecessary and the variable
name is confusing, so let's just get rid of it entirely.

Speaking of bugs, ANI doesn't even get triggered on a system with HZ=1000
and PowerSave is enabled. The check for the power state causes it to exit
early, I think.

Several OpenWrt users have tested this on various AR9001 and AR9002
devices and have reported a very significant increase in stability in a
variety of environments. Sure, this needs a bit more testing, but the
old code is known broken in many ways, yet at the same time a bit too
convoluted for proper bug analysis.
I think removing the old code is our best option for having a chance to
again be able to fully understand the code and its various side effects.
Leaving the old code in place just makes it more likely for regressions
to show up when the new code is improved (as has already happened on
several occasions).

Beacon RSSI is only meaningful in station mode - in ad-hoc mode it
fluctuates, depending on which peer last sent a beacon, and in other
modes it is not set at all.
Fix places in ANI where the beacon RSSI is used to limit their use
to station mode only.

Yeah, but in ibss mode it does not make much sense when there are
multiple peers and a less frequent update interval (due to distributed
beaconing).

So I discussed this with a systems guy and the conclusion was that the
new ANI can be used - but it needs to be tested with older HW.
And this has not been tested by anyone - all our internal drivers
running on Windows/Linux/MacOS etc. use the older ANI with apparently
no problems. If ath9k's performance is sub-optimal then it's purely
a problem with ath9k - which is probably due to shitty code.
I am looking at numbers that have been arrived at after exhaustive
testing of the new ANI - quantifiable facts that verify all the various
levels/thresholds etc. with proper injection of interference.
The proposed migration has no supporting numbers at all.
Nuking the old algorithm completely would leave us in a position where
we can't even do a comparative analysis of old vs. new. And we can't approach
the systems/HW guys if any issue crops up - I really don't want us to be
stuck in an island.

Well, we did have two separate implementations which were merged at some point,
hence the overlapping code.
At this point, am not sure. So having said all that, my vote is to ACK this
patch and find some time to setup a testbed and validate this shit. :)
Sujith
It was found to be buggy on a variety of chipsets from AR913x to AR928x.
The new version (which was introduced along with AR93xx support) is more
reliable in preventing connectivity dropouts and also fixes MIB interrupt
storm issues.

Commit af1e8a6f "ath9k: reset noiseimmunity level to default" was supposed
to ensure that the default noise immunity level is above the INI
values, however it prevents setting lower noise immunity values altogether.
Fix this by moving the checks to the right function.

I don't know which of those parameters are relevant, I don't have a
reproducible test case myself.
I don't have links to all relevant bug reports anymore, here are a few
that I could find:
https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/10166
https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/11442
Some of the discussion is missing in those tickets, as I had some email
exchanges with some of the bug reporters off-list.
What is not very visible in the ticket discussion is that I gave some
test patches to a few users with various parts of Raj's commit reverted
to try to pinpoint the source of the regression, but that didn't work
out, there may be other changes that we haven't found yet that break
old-ANI as well.
> MIB interrupt storms will not be seen because they aren't used at all.
Right, the old implementation depends on MIB interrupt support, the new
one doesn't.

What kind of false positives?

I did review pretty much all of the code, and the knobs that the ANI
code tweaks really haven't changed much compared to the old
implementation. It's split up into different functions, which makes it a
bit harder to see the similarities.
The main implementation differences that I can find is that the new
implementation does not tweak the AGC parameters anymore (commit log
mentions something about this messing up RIFS Rx) and that the old
implementation tries to tune all available ANI control parameters
individually, whereas the new implementation contains a table that
describes how the parameters are raised/lowered at once (split into OFDM
and CCK).
This simplifies the state machine quite a bit and makes it easier to
make sure that it does not get stuck somewhere.
As for hw specific improvements, old hw does not tweak MRC
enable/disable for CCK, this is dealt with properly in the code.

Having two similar implementations of the same thing in the code,
partially overlapping, makes the code hard to follow and hard to fix.
Also, as I pointed out, the issue of regressions creeping in because of
complex code is not theoretical, it has already happened, and I believe
it is likely to happen again unless the root cause (spaghetti code) is
fixed.
The main state machine of the new implementation is much easier to
understand and follow than the old one, and I'm confident that it'll be
much easier for us to fix bugs there.

OK, that can be taken care of in a followup patch.

beacon rssi is updated and used in both station and ibss mode. isn't it?

I dont think it is good idea to completely removing old ANI for all AR9002
family chips. No one have ever tested the new ANI with all ar9002 chips. May
be there could be some regressions with old ANI. As we discussed in irc did
you get any feedback from openwrt users with partial revert patch? So it is
not viable to wipe out old ani support for older chips.
-Rajkumar
Commit "ath9k_hw: improve ANI processing and rx desensitizing parameters"
was unifying some code related to overriding OFDM weak signal detection,
but seems to have gotten some of the original intent wrong, probably
because of a misnamed variable.
The beacon RSSI is only valid in station mode, and the main reason to check
it in ath9k_hw_set_ofdm_nil is to make sure that OFDM weak signal detection
stays enabled if the RSSI is low, even when the OFDM noise immunity entry
is supposed to disable it.
The above commit removed the mode checks and changed the code so that
OFDM weak signal detection would only be changed if the rssi is high, which
is wrong for everything but client mode.
This patch restores the old behavior in a simplified form.

What bugs exactly ? Can you elaborate which cases show improvement ?
OFDM weak signal detection ?
CCK weak signal detection ?
Noise immunity ?
Firstep_Level ?
MIB interrupt storms will not be seen because they aren't used at all.
False positives are an issue with ANI and has this been studied with the
move to the new algorithm ?
The new ANI algorithm is designed to take advantage of the HW improvements
in AR300 and above. Has it been verified that the older HW generation can actually
conform to the requirements of the new algorithm ?
If there are bugs or regressions in the existing code in ath9k, we can surely
fix them. But IMHO, saying 'general stability is improved' is not really a
justification for code extermination. Why can't we opt for a more evolutionary
approach ?
