I tested Debian 11 Live ISO with Linux 5.10 and wpa_supplicant 2.9, and
it has the same problem. I configured iwd, and ran iwmon, which got a
trace [2] (where I unplugged the Ethernet cable during the trace).

I cannot duplicate your problem. When I installed the RTL8188EE chip in my
computer, wifi connected immediately, even before I connected an external antenna.

My configuration is openSUSE Tumbleweed running a 6.1-rc4 kernel. The network is
controlled by NetworkManager v1.40.2 with wpa_supplicant v2.10-4.

No beacon loss messages between NL80211_CMD_CONNECT and NL80211_CMD_DEL_STATION, so
8188ee seems to receive packets well.

Please check if you have more than one daemon working at the same time.
A way is to turn off WiFi from GUI, and use 'iw connect' to connect an
AP without security.

Thank you for checking. Just a quick update, the user reported back,
that Wifi is working fine at here home. So it must be some
incompatibility with our institute Aruba access points/Wifi.

Hopefully I have more time next week to gather more logs.

Kind regards,

Paul

One thing that would be useful would be the in-the-air packets captured with
WireShark. That way we could see the actual probe and response.

I am sorry for not getting back to you earlier. The user worked around
the situation at our institute with Aruba access points by using a wired
connection, the laptop luckily still has.

The current stack is *linux-image-6.4.0-2-amd64* 6.4.4-3,
*wpasupplicant* 2:2.10-15, and *network-manager* 1.44.0-1.

Remotely, I installed *tshark* 4.0.8-1, enabled the Wifi

$ sudo nmcli radio wifi on

and started capturing.

$ tshark -i wlp8s0 -w /dev/shm/20230918--linux-6.4.4--tshark.pcapng

As Larry mentioned "in-the-air packets" would be helpful.

In your captured packets, only 54:27:1e:f6:b8:d3 as source to send out DHCP and
ICMP v6 packets, but I don't know if it really sends out, or peer (AP) doesn't
reply the packets.

As your log, I believe it can connect to "MPI Guest"
" wlp8s0: CTRL-EVENT-CONNECTED - Connection to 6c:f3:7f:10:a4:12 completed"

But, somehow it can't yield IP and then disconnect...
"device (wlp8s0): state change: ip-config -> failed (reason 'ip-config-unavailable', sys-iface-state: 'managed')"

I suggest to set fixed IP address via NM to see if it can work.
